Description
The story is set in a fashion health club somewhere in the Kansai region of Japan, where a rotating cast of men with varied sexual preferences and desires visit for paid sexual services. The narrative centers on three women who work there. Mayumi is a plump, cheerful woman in her early thirties who is separated from her husband Takashi and going through divorce mediation, despite the two still loving each other. Chinatsu is a former yankee with a quick temper who attracts masochistic male clients, and she struggles to contain her violent impulses. Shio is a slim, well-read woman in her mid-twenties who projects an air of quiet intelligence.
The manga follows the personal and professional lives of these three women as they navigate their work in the club's private rooms, their conversations in the break room, and their private lives outside of work. Mayumi and Takashi's relationship is a central thread: they are separated but clearly care for one another, and the series tracks the slow, messy process of their reconciliation. Chinatsu becomes involved with a client named Mizoguchi, a masochistic man with whom she communicates through live chats outside of the club. Shio is drawn into an unfamiliar world by another client named Okita, who introduces her to experiences outside her usual sphere. The story also explores Shio's past with her incarcerated ex-husband and the origins of Mayumi and Takashi's relationship.
The manga is a character-driven, slice-of-life work that examines how people in the sex industry live, work, and relate to one another in contemporary Japan. It portrays the women with nuance, highlighting their resilience, their flaws, and their everyday struggles with money, relationships, and self-worth. The tone is understated and observational, avoiding melodrama and instead focusing on the small moments that make up their lives. The series is published by Futabasha and began serialization in June 2024.
