Kiri Azumi is a celebrated orchestra conductor known for his abrasive personality and demanding standards. After a conflict with his ensemble and a decline in his health, he is forced to take leave and return to his rural hometown in Hokkaido to recuperate. On his first night back, he nearly freezes to death in the cold, only to be rescued by Osamu Mitsuya, a warm-hearted and energetic local grocer who has been a devoted fan of Kiri's work for years. Osamu, likened to a large, affectionate dog, immediately begins to dote on Kiri, much to the conductor's irritation.
