Description
Naoto Mizushima is a high-achieving securities trader, sharp-eyed and relentless in the cutthroat world of finance. But beneath his polished exterior, he is running on empty: unable to sleep, unable to eat, and hollowed out by the relentless pressure. Seeking respite, he travels to the coast of southern Chiba Prefecture. There, while swimming, he is caught in a strong current and nearly drowns. He is rescued by a woman who dives into the sea with effortless grace—an elderly ama, or female free diver, named Kiku. Kiku is seventy-six years old, weathered by decades of harvesting the ocean, yet possessed of a quiet strength and independence that Naoto finds mesmerizing. Drawn to her world, he becomes a reluctant apprentice to the local ama community, learning the rhythms of the tide, the art of free diving, and the deep bond these women share with the sea. His rigid, urban life begins to unravel as he experiences a slower, more elemental existence. As he spends more time with Kiku, he discovers the hardships and joys of her long life—the Showa years of poverty, the resilience of the women who sustained their families, and the profound love she once knew. Naoto’s feelings deepen into something unexpected: a pure, unguarded affection that transcends the fifty-year gap between them. The story unfolds against the beautiful, ever-changing seascape of Minamiboso, blending present-day encounters with flashbacks to Kiku’s youth. As Naoto confronts his own burnout and Kiku faces the fragility of age, their connection challenges conventional ideas of romance and purpose, culminating in a gentle, bittersweet exploration of what it means to truly live.
