Miharu Ogawa grows up in the countryside, scrolling through social media posts of glamorous Tokyo university students and dreaming of a life like theirs. She studies hard, wins admission to a Tokyo university, and moves to the capital with high hopes. But the reality is harsh: rent, tuition, and living expenses eat up her part-time wages, and she cannot keep up with wealthier classmates who buy designer clothes and accessories without a second thought. Feeling trapped and humiliated, Miharu sees no way out of her financial struggle.

At the start of her second year, a friend persuades her to enter a university beauty pageant. Miharu places as runner-up, and through the contest she meets Tenkai Noa, a confident and well-connected student. Noa introduces Miharu to the world of gyala-nomi – paid drinking parties where young women are compensated for their company by older, affluent men. Initially hesitant, Miharu is pulled in by the easy money and the sense of validation she receives from being treated to expensive dinners and designer gifts. She begins to style herself as a Minato-ku girl, a term for women who operate in Tokyo’s upscale Minato ward, trading on their youth and appearance for material gain.

Miharu’s life transforms. She quits her low-wage jobs, moves into a nicer apartment, and develops a taste for luxury. But the more she earns, the more her self-worth becomes tied to the amount men spend on her. Her financial sense warps as she spends freely, assuming the money will always keep coming. By her late twenties, however, the invitations dwindle. The men who once paid for her company now chase younger women. Panicked by her falling market value, Miharu turns to cosmetic surgery to reclaim her fading youth, believing that more beauty will restore her income and status. One procedure leads to another, and she sinks deeper into debt.

The story follows Miharu’s descent from starry-eyed student to hardened gyala-nomi veteran, and eventually to a woman caught in a spiral of debt and body modification. Along the way, it also tracks Noa, who remains trapped in the same cycle, unable to escape as she ages out of the scene. Miharu’s family – particularly her worried mother and dying grandmother – try to pull her back, and their words force her to confront what she has become. The narrative traces the psychological toll of equating one’s worth with youth and appearance, the gradual erosion of normal financial judgment, and the difficulty of breaking free once the easy money has reshaped every aspect of life. Through Miharu’s journey, the story examines both the glittering surface and the crushing underside of the Minato-ku girl subculture, offering a raw, semi-fictional account grounded in real interviews.
