In the kingdom of Eridenburg, Lady Tiziano (often spelled Titianne) is a capable knight and the leader of the Salvirio border guard, who has been engaged since childhood to Prince Antonio. The prince, however, dismisses her as unladylike and publicly humiliates her at a party by breaking their engagement in favor of a rival, Marianne. Tiziano, who has long realized the prince's incompetence, accepts the breakup with icy composure and walks away, leaving the court scandalized.
