After years of training in top kaiseki restaurants across Tokyo, Kyoto, and Kanazawa, the young chef Ihashi Satoru has been working at the Ginza establishment Kino-ya. A wealthy customer offers to back his independent restaurant, and Ihashi begins to seriously consider the move. But around the same time, he learns that the master of Fujimura, the Tokyo Shinjuku restaurant where he first apprenticed, has been hospitalized with early-stage stomach cancer. The master, Kumano Shinkichi, is recovering but his stamina has declined, and the kitchen is severely short-handed, run only by his longtime colleague Tanizawa Makoto and the elderly Bon-san. Ihashi immediately offers to return to Fujimura. Both the master and Tanizawa urge him to pursue his own dream, but Ihashi insists that he is still learning and that to one day own his own restaurant he must first come back to his roots and continue his training under the master's eye. He rejoins the Fujimura kitchen, where three new young apprentices have also arrived, and together they face the daily pressures of running a traditional Japanese restaurant in a changing world.
