Description
The story follows the two popular recurring characters from the long-running cooking manga series Aji Ichi Monme: the young chef Ihashi and the veteran older chef Bon-san. In this spin-off, they step away from the kitchen of the Fujimura restaurant and take on a completely new role as culinary interviewers. Traveling across Japan, the pair visit the homes and hometowns of legendary manga artists, sitting down with each creator to discuss their lives and careers from the specific angle of food. Each chapter focuses on a single guest manga artist, and the conversation revolves around their personal food memories and the role that eating played in their formative years and during the most intense periods of their creative work. Ihashi and Bon-san draw out stories about the struggle of living on cheap meals while trying to break into the industry, the comfort foods that got the artists through brutal deadlines and all-night drawing sessions, and the specific dishes or ingredients that are tied to the creation of some of their most famous works. The manga thus functions as a dual-interest work, serving both as a food manga and as a behind-the-scenes history of the Japanese manga industry. Over the course of the three volumes, the guest lineup includes a rotating cast of some of the most influential figures in manga. Volume one features Big Jo, Noboru Kawasaki, Jiro Taniguchi, Monkey Punch, Tomochi Ueyama, Takao Yaguchi, Ryoichi Ikegami, Tetsuya Chiba, Yū Koyama, Naoki Urasawa, and Shigeru Tsuchiyama. Volume two shifts to female and other legendary creators, including Machiko Satō, Kenichi Kitami, Yumiko Igarashi, Kenji Nanba, Kenshi Hirokane, Daiji Ichibe, Eiko Hanamura, Yūkari Ichijō, Rumiko Takahashi, Mineo Maya, and Hideki Hino. Volume three concludes the series with guests such as Yoshihiro Takahashi, Eiko Mizuno, Fujihiko Hosono, Daisuke Terasawa, Masashi Ueda, Mamoru Masaki, Yoichi Takahashi, A-ko Mutsu, Moto Hagio, Kaiji Kawaguchi, and Yoshimi Kurata, the artist of the series itself. The narrative arc is defined by each self-contained interview, with no overarching conflict or plot beyond the joy of discovery and the sharing of personal histories.
