A young woman named Matilda Lister is searching for work and a place to stay when she arrives at the Luttinson Estate, a sprawling mansion known locally as the haunted house. The owner, August Luttinson, is a tall, beautiful, and soft-spoken woman who immediately charms Matilda. Hired as a live-in maid, Matilda is given three strict rules: do not leave her room after midnight, never enter August’s bedroom, and never speak of the estate’s affairs to outsiders. On her very first night, curiosity gets the better of her, and she wanders the darkened halls. There she encounters the ghosts of previous maids and, more alarmingly, a transformed August with glowing red eyes and fangs. August loses control and feeds on Matilda’s blood—her first time drinking directly from a living human.
