Description
As a child, the protagonist, Edie, was raised as a prince, her true gender concealed from the world. This carefully maintained facade shatters when she is injured and the nobleman Harold, her attendant, undresses her to treat the wound, exposing her secret. With her identity as a princess revealed, she is deemed unfit for a political marriage, becoming a burden to the royal family. To salvage the situation, she is ordered to marry the very man who discovered her deception, Harold, who is forced to take responsibility for having touched her skin.
Convinced that this marriage is deeply unwanted by Harold, Edie resolves to become a bad wife in order to drive him into divorcing her. However, her meticulously crafted schemes of ill behavior consistently prove ineffective against Harold's remarkably tolerant and forgiving nature. Far from pushing him away, her actions only seem to deepen his affection, and she finds herself subjected to an unexpectedly doting and loving married life. The story follows Edie's comedic and frustrating struggle to secure a divorce, her plans thwarted at every turn by a husband who has absolutely no intention of letting her go, leading to a romantic fantasy where her quest for separation only strengthens their bond. As the narrative progresses, a visit to the royal palace to see her younger brother, Jaylus, introduces new dangers and forces Edie to confront her own feelings, ultimately leading her to accept that she cannot continue to hide her heart.
