Description
Kanako Kogawa moved from Aomori to Tokyo at age twenty with a deep passion for architecture and a fondness for good sake. After working at a design firm for seven years, she strikes out on her own and establishes a personal office in Kameido, Tokyo, complete with a standing bar where clients and friends can gather. Now twenty-seven, Kanako is a newly independent first-class architect with little money but abundant ideals and a stubborn Aomori spirit she calls joppari. The story follows her daily life as she takes on a variety of projects: residential renovations, commercial buildings, and complex compliance challenges, all while navigating the real-world demands of Japanese building regulations, construction management, and client relationships. Each episode focuses on a different professional topic, such as site surveys, fire escape routes, concrete cracks, or the differences between an architect and a building contractor, presented through Kanako’s hands-on experience and the camaraderie of the colleagues she meets along the way. A major narrative arc flashes back to her years preparing for the first-class architect national examination, a notoriously difficult test with a pass rate around ten percent, where she bonds with a group of fellow examinees who become lifelong friends. Another arc takes Kanako back to her hometown of Hirosaki in Aomori, where she revisits childhood memories with her late grandfather, explores local architecture, and reconnects with the roots of her determination. Through successes, setbacks, and the occasional drink with clients, Kanako grows as a professional while the manga grounds its story in authentic technical detail drawn from the author’s own experience as a licensed first-class architect and construction manager.
