Saraana, a young woman from a grassland nation, enters the imperial palace of the Radiant Land of Kouyoku as a political bride to secure peace between her homeland and the great empire. She is immediately confronted by the beautiful emperor and his queen, both of whom regard her with open hostility. Thrown into a world of conspiracy, scheming, and hidden agendas within the inner palace, Saraana finds herself surrounded by concubines and court officials who view her foreign origins with suspicion and contempt. Armed with her innate determination and sharp wit, she must navigate the treacherous politics of the harem, uncover the secrets that lurk behind the palace's opulent facade, and carve out her own fate in a place where trust is scarce and every alliance comes with a price.

The story unfolds across a short but dense narrative of seven chapters collected in two volumes, originally preceded by a two-part story titled Amakakeru Ookami: Koukoku Ibunroku and a one-shot titled Hakugyoku Botan: Koukoku Ibunroku. The setting draws from a fantastical Chinese-inspired imperial court, with elaborate costumes, palace intrigue, and a romance that develops between Saraana and the emperor amid the power struggles of the harem. A spin-off sequel, Kouyoukoku Koukyuutan: Kokui no Shugo, follows a different heroine who, noticed for her abilities by a government official named Sou, is assigned a role while dressed in black and eventually crosses paths with the emperor Shuugyou, weaving a Chinese spectacular romance centered on two men and a girl.
