Description
Middle school student Alice Asahida appears to have it all: striking looks, natural athleticism, and a friendly demeanor that makes her popular among her classmates. Beneath the surface, however, she carries a hidden struggle. Her parents, who provided her with a bilingual upbringing, died when she was young, and without their continued guidance she lost fluency in both Japanese and English. This condition, known as being semilingual, leaves her unable to follow lessons or express herself clearly, and she begins to lose confidence in her own abilities.

Her world shifts when she meets Rui Inuboshi, a quiet and exceptionally intelligent boy who quickly recognizes the nature of her language difficulties. He tells her plainly, "I will make you smart." With that promise, he becomes her mentor and partner, helping her study and rebuild her academic skills. Inspired by his support and the desire to reach a place her parents might see, Alice sets an audacious goal: to become Japan's first female astronaut commander. The story follows her as she rediscovers the joy of learning, confronts social and educational obstacles, and takes concrete steps toward her dream, beginning with an astronaut selection workshop for middle school students.

The narrative is grounded in realistic depictions of the astronaut selection process, informed by research and expert consultation, and unfolds against the backdrop of modern space exploration initiatives. Alice's growth is shaped not only by her own perseverance but also by her deepening bond with Rui, which evolves from a teacher-student dynamic into a partnership of mutual trust and support. Along the way, she learns to articulate her thoughts, find her voice in group settings, and lead with empathy and determination. The story emphasizes themes of self-acceptance, the power of language, and the resilience required to pursue a seemingly impossible dream.
