Emily Fajardo
Description
Emily Fajardo is an American voice actress and voice director, born on September 3, 1991, in Glenwood, Iowa. She is primarily associated with the English dubs of anime produced at the Crunchyroll studio in Dallas, Texas, where she works extensively both behind the microphone and in a creative leadership role.
Fajardo's path to a career in voice acting was shaped by her early life in Glenwood. Diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at the age of nine, she spent considerable time at home, during which she independently explored creative fields like art, acting, and writing online. She credits her parents, both educators, for instilling a love of learning. Her interest in the arts was also nurtured by local teachers, including a third-grade instructor who connected her with Glenwood native and Oscar-winning animator Don Hall. Fajardo is a 2009 graduate of Glenwood Community High School and went on to study art and design at Washington University in St. Louis, where she also minored in theater. During college, she furthered her self-directed voice-over training by auditioning online for independent projects and recording herself to practice. After graduating, she moved to Texas with the initial intention of pursuing a master's degree in animation, but her path led her instead to what was then Funimation, now Crunchyroll.
As a voice actress, Fajardo has built an impressive resume, estimating that she has voiced around two hundred characters. She is known for her versatility and has developed a reputation for taking on "zany" and villainous roles. Some of her most prominent and widely recognized roles include the titular protagonist Bojji in Ranking of Kings, the mischievous cat Bananya in Bananya and the Curious Bunch, and Rem in Trigun Stampede. Her filmography also features a wide array of other characters, such as Maria in The Vampire Dies in No Time, Tae Ohto in Wonder Egg Priority, Sōta Hori in Horimiya, Aiko Hatayama in Arifureta: From Commonplace to World's Strongest, Eua in both Higurashi: When They Cry – GOU and SOTSU, and young Tomura Shigaraki in My Hero Academia. She has also lent her voice to video game characters, notably Eleanor in Borderlands 3 and the role of Little Swan in the Azur Lane anime adaptation.
In addition to her acting work, Fajardo holds a significant position as a voice director for Crunchyroll, a role she considers her "dream job" and the "professional love of my life". Her directing responsibilities are extensive and include casting, where she listens to thousands of auditions, and guiding actors during recording sessions to find the right emotional performance for each scene. A key technical challenge of her work is adapting the English dialogue to match the animated mouth movements, or "flip-flops," which were originally crafted for the Japanese language. In December 2022, she was chosen to be the lead director for the long-running and globally popular series One Piece, directing approximately 150 episodes. Her work has earned her praise from colleagues; for instance, veteran voice actor R. Bruce Elliott complimented her directing skills and understanding of the material on the set of My Dress-Up Darling. A point of interest for fans is that she is not related to fellow voice actor Ricco Fajardo, despite sharing a surname and working in the same Texas-based industry.
