Paul Matzke

Description
Paul Matzke is a German actor and voice actor based in Berlin, recognized for his work in dubbing numerous anime series for the German market. Before focusing on voice acting, Matzke trained as a stage actor and performed at German municipal theaters for nearly a decade, also taking on roles in front of the camera for film and television. He transitioned to voice work to establish a fixed residence in Berlin, and his entry into anime dubbing began with roles such as White Wolf in a Marvel anime series.

A significant early role in anime for Matzke was providing the German voice for the main character Ouma Tokita in the action series Kengan Ashura. This was followed by a range of other notable parts, including Riz, the complex brown bear, in the acclaimed series BEASTARS. His filmography also includes the character Souei in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, Hyouma Yoshimura in Concrete Revolutio: The Last Song, Thanzamer in I'm Standing on 1,000,000 Lives, Jack in Ultraman, and Kazumo in Sword Gai: The Animation Part II.

In his approach to anime dubbing, Matzke emphasizes the importance of experience and sensitivity to adapt the often exaggerated and stylized performances of the original Japanese tracks into German that sounds natural to local audiences. He notes that this process is highly dependent on the project and the direction provided, sometimes resulting in more subdued performances and other times in very theatrical ones, as he experienced with JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. He typically works under the guidance of a dialogue director, who provides context for scenes and ensures the German performance fits the narrative flow. Matzke also voices characters in non-anime productions, such as the role of Baek Yoonho in the Korean webtoon-based anime Solo Leveling and characters in films like Captain Marvel and Tenet.
