José Santacruz

José Santacruz was a Brazilian voice actor known for his extensive work in dubbing anime, animated series, and live-action films for the Portuguese market. He was born on March 14, 1929, in Paraíba, Brazil, and was based in Rio de Janeiro for much of his career. He passed away on April 26, 2024.

Santacruz's career was marked by a wide range of prominent roles in animation. He was particularly well-known for providing the voice of the Decepticon leader Megatron across numerous Transformers productions. His portrayal of the character spanned several series and films, including the animated series Transformers: Armada, the original Transformers TV series, and the live-action films Transformers, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and Transformers: Age of Extinction, where he voiced Galvatron. He also voiced the character in The Transformers: The Movie.

His voice acting repertoire included a variety of other significant characters in anime and Western animation. He voiced Capitão Gancho (Captain Hook) in the series Peter Pan & Wendy. In the anime film Alakazam the Great, he was the voice of Sir Quigley Broken Bottom. He portrayed Dr. Gilmore in Cyborg 009 The Cyborg Soldier and took on the role of Oswald Cobblepot, also known as Pinguim (The Penguin), in the film Batman Ninja. His work in anime also included roles in Cowboy Bebop: The Movie as Antônio and Carlos, Metropolis as Presidente Boone, and the Death Note franchise as Watari in both the live-action films and the TV series.

Throughout his long career, José Santacruz became a familiar and respected voice in Brazilian dubbing, contributing to many beloved titles for generations of viewers. His work extended beyond animation to include live-action series such as the Portuguese-language dub of the sitcom Dinosaurs, where he voiced the character Dino.
