Description
The legendary lovers, the Cowherd and the Weaving Maiden, can no longer bear the pain of being separated in the heavens and seeing each other only once a year. Their attempted escape to the mortal world to be together forever fails when they are caught by celestial guards. The Queen Mother of the West offers them a test: they will be reincarnated as mortals in contemporary Singapore to see if fate can bring them together again. The stakes of this test are raised when a rebellion in heaven threatens to dethrone the Queen Mother and the Jade Emperor. A deal is struck with the god Erlang Shen: if the reincarnated couple finds lasting love, the rulers will keep their thrones; if they separate, the rulers will fall.
The story follows the modern lives of Yang Tian Ying, the reincarnation of the Cowherd, and Wang Tian Qin, the reincarnation of the Weaving Maiden, who are unaware of their divine origins. As they navigate their daily existence in Singapore, a proxy war unfolds around them. Erlang Shen dispatches several of the Eight Immortals to sabotage any chance of the pair reuniting, while the Queen Mother secretly sends other figures, including the woodcutter Wu Gang, to ensure they come together.
The series is set against a backdrop where numerous gods and mythical figures from Chinese folklore have taken on human forms and are living in the mortal world, some exiled, some in hiding, and others on specific missions. A concurrent narrative arc involves a love triangle among Wu Gang, the modern incarnation of the moon goddess Chang Er, and the pig demon Zhu Bajie, which complicates Wu Gang’s mission and allegiances. As the series progresses, Tian Ying and Tian Qin eventually recover the memories of their past lives. However, they discover that their shared celestial history does not automatically translate to a harmonious modern relationship, forcing them to decide if their mortal bond is stronger than the legend that dictates they should be together.
