Description
Nishiki Nishio is a ghoul who originally claimed a feeding ground in Tokyo’s 20th ward before it was taken by the more powerful Rize Kamishiro. He was a second-year student in the Pharmaceutical Department of Kamii University and the boyfriend of Kimi Nishino. In Tokyo Ghoul:re, he becomes known under the alias Serpent or Orochi and is classified as an S-rated ghoul.

His background is marked by tragedy: his sister was killed by the Commission of Counter Ghoul, an event that deeply wounded his ability to trust others and pushed him into a lone wolf mentality. This history shapes his abrasive, sharp-tongued, and often aggressive demeanor. He initially appears fiercely independent and dismissive of those he considers weak or troublesome. However, beneath this tough exterior lies a capacity for deep emotional connection and vulnerability.

Nishiki’s motivations evolve over the course of the story. Early on, he is driven primarily by survival and a desire to protect his own territory. After a brutal fight with Ken Kaneki, Nishiki is forced to eat Kimi to recover from his injuries. Instead of being rejected, Kimi accepts him as a ghoul, which becomes a turning point. This relationship softens his isolation and leads him to join the ghoul café Anteiku as a waiter, securing a stable food source and moving away from killing humans. In Tokyo Ghoul:re, his motivations shift further; he becomes known for hunting and killing other ghouls with little regard for their lives, acting as a ruthless enforcer. His encounters with the Quinx Squad reveal a casual, sarcastic side that hints at his complex personality.

Key relationships include his bond with Kimi Nishino, which grounds him and opens him to trust; his rivalry and eventual alliance with Ken Kaneki; and his connection to the Anteiku community. In:re, he interacts with the Quinx Squad and other ghoul investigators, often showing a pragmatic and callous attitude. His development traces a path from a self-centered, isolated ghoul to someone capable of loyalty, though still morally ambiguous.

Nishiki possesses a Bikaku-type kagune, which takes the form of a long, tail-like appendage that can be used for stabbing, sweeping, and pulling opponents. As a ghoul, he has enhanced physical abilities including strength, speed, regeneration, and durability. In Tokyo Ghoul:re, his kagune grows larger and regenerates more quickly, improving his combat effectiveness. His experience and tactical cunning make him a formidable fighter, and his reputation as the Serpent reflects his snake-like mask and his dangerous reputation within the ghoul underworld.
