Maine entered the world in Portland, Maine, born to a jazz singer mother who chose that city during her pregnancy. A sickly and undersized child, frequent bullying led him to resolve himself towards strength. He pursued this goal through underground boxing, investing his first winnings in titanium metacarpal and phalange implants for his right hand to amplify his punches. Following his mother's passing, he worked as a club bouncer until violently confronting troublemakers who were actually NUSA SpecOps operatives, resulting in his dismissal. This encounter, however, earned him a job offer from NUSA SpecOps, which he accepted. Deployed to South America alongside Solomon Reed, Maine grew disillusioned witnessing village burnings. Discharged after two years, he later rejected Reed's proposal to establish an FIA spy network in Night City during the Unification War. Instead, he moved there to become an edgerunner and forge his own crew. In Night City, Maine built his crew by recruiting individuals like Dorio Gunnarsdóttir, whom he saved from a failed assassination. Members included Pilar, Rebecca, netrunners Sasha Yakovleva and Kiwi, and later Lucy Kushinada. Falco was a frequent associate, not an official member. Maine valued fairness and loyalty, insisting on equal payment splits and prioritizing crew safety. While dreaming of "making it big," he cherished his crew's camaraderie above all. His leadership involved taking responsibility, covering for his team with police, and guiding newcomers like David Martinez. Maine's extensive cybernetic augmentation, including Gorilla Arms for superhuman strength and forearm-integrated Projectile Launch Systems, stemmed from childhood insecurities about his frail physique. This obsession with cybernetic power was driven by early vulnerability. His appearance featured a large, muscular build, red-tinted sunglasses, and practical attire with multiple belts. He maintained both a romantic and professional partnership with Dorio, who served as his second-in-command and emotional anchor. Maine's relationship with David Martinez began conflictually over a military-grade Sandevistan implant. Gloria Martinez had secured the implant for Maine but died before completing the deal. Discovering David using it, Maine initially planned to kill him. After David explained the circumstances and demonstrated unusual cyberware tolerance, Maine offered him a place in the crew. He became David's mentor and father figure, encouraging his relationship with Lucy and advising on cyberware upgrades. He even promised David his cybernetic arms upon his death, symbolizing a legacy transfer. Maine's descent into cyberpsychosis was triggered by refusing to reduce his cybernetic load despite worsening symptoms. Early signs included arm cannon malfunctions during a fight with a cyberpsycho that killed Pilar. His condition deteriorated, bringing blackouts, paranoia, and uncharacteristic aggression, including attacking Kiwi and destroying her cybernetic jaw. Dorio urged implant removal, but Maine dismissed this as "downgrading," citing pride and feeling he had "come too far" to weaken. His mental state degraded further, leading to violent outbursts and complete loss of reality during the mission to abduct Tanaka. Maine's final breakdown occurred confronting NCPD and Trauma Team after Tanaka's abduction. In full cyberpsychosis, he fired indiscriminately, accidentally targeting Dorio. A temporary lucidity induced by immunosuppressants allowed him to witness Dorio being shot and killed by an NCPD officer. Overwhelmed by guilt and grief, he fully embraced cyberpsychosis, slaughtering multiple officers and Trauma Team members. He then constructed a pyre of explosive canisters around Dorio's body. In his last moments of clarity, he urged David to flee and accepted his fate, detonating the explosives to kill himself and approaching Maxtac units. His final mental image was of his pre-augmented, scrawny self, reflecting a lifetime of physical insecurity.
