Description
Kaguya is the primary antagonist in the second animated film of the InuYasha series. Her character draws direct inspiration from the classic Japanese folktale The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, specifically the story of Princess Kaguya, a celestial maiden who descended from the moon. In the context of the film, Kaguya is not the original princess but rather a powerful demon who, fifty years before the film's events, absorbed the real celestial maiden. By taking her form, voice, and powers, the demon successfully assumed the identity of Kaguya, the Princess of the Heavens.

Centuries prior to the story, Kaguya was a formidable youkai who could consume other demons and humans to steal their abilities. Her goal was to use the legendary Celestial Robe, a garment originally belonging to the true moon princess, to stop the flow of time and create a world of Eternal Night, over which she would rule unchallenged. However, her plan was thwarted by Miyatsu, the grandfather of the monk Miroku. Unable to destroy her because of her captivating beauty, Miyatsu instead sealed Kaguya inside her own magical mirror, the Mirror of Life. This mirror was hidden away in a shrine in the Forest of Illusion, where she remained imprisoned for fifty years. During this time, her stolen Celestial Robe came into the possession of the Hōjō family, who were instructed to throw it into Mount Fuji should Kaguya ever be freed.

Kaguya is depicted as a cold, calculating, and profoundly arrogant being. She possesses immense power and is fully aware of her own superiority, viewing mortals and lesser demons with disdain. Her personality is marked by a ruthless determination to achieve her goals, showing no hesitation to manipulate or destroy anyone in her path. Unlike some villains who revel in sadism, Kaguya's demeanor is eerily serene and detached, pursuing her desire to freeze the world with a quiet, chilling resolve. She is a master manipulator, able to perceive the deepest, darkest desires of a person's heart. For example, she senses Inuyasha's secret wish to become a full-fledged demon and later uses this against him, while she tempts the wind sorceress Kagura with the promise of true freedom in exchange for service.

Her primary motivation is to reclaim the Celestial Robe, which she needs to achieve immortality and halt time. To this end, she forges a temporary alliance with Kagura and Kanna, two of Naraku's incarnations who are left directionless after their master's apparent death. Kaguya promises to grant Kagura's wish for freedom, and in return, they help her gather the five mystical items required to break the seal on her mirror. These five items, which include a jewel from a dragon's neck, a branch from the mythical Hōrai island, a swallow's cowrie shell, the Stone Bowl of Buddha, and a piece of Inuyasha's Robe of the Fire-Rat, are directly inspired by the impossible tasks given to Princess Kaguya's suitors in the original legend.

Kaguya's role in the story is that of a major threat who emerges following the apparent defeat of the series' main villain, Naraku. She serves as a powerful diversion, but her existence is also a trap. As the heroes battle to stop her from freezing time, it is revealed that Naraku faked his own death, hiding within Kohaku's body to wait for Kaguya to reveal herself. His true intention was to absorb her, and her immense power, for himself. In a final confrontation, Kaguya manages to use her mirror to seal away Inuyasha's human heart, unleashing his full, savage demon form. This spell is ultimately broken by Kagome's desperate act of love.

Her most significant relationship is a hostile one with Naraku, whose goal to absorb her mirrors her own methods of gaining power. She considers him unworthy and impure. Her interactions with others are purely transactional, as seen with Kagura and Kanna, whom she discards without hesitation when they are no longer useful. She is also fascinated by Kagome's spiritual powers and aims to absorb the young priestess into herself. Her link to Inuyasha is more adversarial; she represents a temptation to abandon his humanity for raw power, a struggle he must overcome.

Kaguya is a demon of extraordinary power, possessing a wide array of supernatural abilities. Her signature weapon is her mirror, which she can use to reflect attacks, create illusions, and even seal away aspects of a person's soul or being. She demonstrates telekinesis, teleportation, and the capacity to generate powerful energy blasts. After donning the Celestial Robe, her powers reach their zenith, granting her the ability of chronokinesis, which allows her to freeze time in a localized area, creating pockets of stilled, silent air where only she can move freely. She is also immortal, able to regenerate from wounds rapidly and even survive the complete destruction of her physical body. In such an event, she can survive as a malevolent black cloud of spiritual energy and attempt to possess a new host. Her very presence affects the natural world, causing the moon to become full and shift to an unnatural color while making cherry blossom trees bloom out of season. In combat, she can manifest ribbon-like tentacles from her body to restrain opponents or transform a hairpin into a sword for close-quarters fighting.
