Description
Hibiki Tokai is the primary male protagonist in Vandread: The Second Stage. His background is rooted in a deeply divided society, as he was born as a third-class citizen on the male-only planet of Taraak. Growing up in this environment, he was taught to view women from the opposing planet of Mejere as enemies, though his low social status meant he worked as a simple mechanic, crafting parts for military mecha known as Vanguards rather than enjoying any significant standing. Despite his lowly position, he possesses a fierce pride and a hot-headed nature, often bragging about his abilities. This leads him to publicly claim he will steal a Vanguard, a boast he feels obligated to fulfill due to the cultural mantra that a man must always keep his word. His attempt to make good on this promise results in him being trapped aboard a battleship, ultimately leading to his capture by an all-female pirate crew and the start of his journey.

In terms of personality, Hibiki is initially depicted as rough, impulsive, and quick to anger. He is a very closed-off individual who rarely shows his feelings, largely because his upbringing on a world without women left him unable to understand or express affection. This emotional guardedness is a core part of his character, making it difficult for him to process the new and unfamiliar social dynamics with the female crew of the ship, the Nirvana. He often finds himself at odds with the women, particularly at the beginning, and is frequently bewildered by their behavior. However, underneath his abrasive exterior lies a skilled and capable individual. He is a first-class Vanguard pilot, a talented mechanic, and shows natural strategic thinking in the heat of battle.

Hibiki's primary motivation throughout the series is tied to his lowly birth. As a third-class citizen, he feels an intense need to prove his worth and his very existence to the world. His initial attempts to steal a Vanguard were a direct result of this desire to show the government he was not to be looked down upon. As the story progresses and he becomes entangled in a fight against a mysterious alien enemy, his goals evolve. He continues to fight to demonstrate his strength and value, but also becomes a key part of the crew’s mission to survive and find their way home.

His role in the story is that of the Nirvana's primary Vanguard pilot. Initially, his participation in battles is reluctant, but after encouragement from the ship's sub-commander, he steps up to defend the vessel. His most vital function is his ability to pilot his Vanguard, which has the unique power to combine with the Dreads, which are the fighters piloted by the three main female characters Dita, Meia, and Jura. This combination creates a powerful mecha known as a Vandread, making him an indispensable part of the ship's combat capabilities. By the events of The Second Stage, his Vanguard can also combine with all three Dreads at once to form an even more powerful Super Vandread.

A key relationship that defines Hibiki's development is his bond with Dita Liebely. Unlike the other women who are initially hostile, Dita is fascinated by Hibiki, whom she calls Mr. Alien, and is deeply and unconditionally in love with him. Hibiki initially finds her obsessive and compulsive behavior annoying and strange, preferring to keep his distance. However, over the course of the series, and especially in The Second Stage, he grows closer to her. He begins to show a softer side, and while he struggles to admit it, he eventually realizes he reciprocates her feelings, culminating in him finally calling her by her name at the end of the series. This relationship serves as the primary vehicle for his emotional growth, forcing him to confront his own prejudices and learn to connect with another person on a meaningful level. He also shares the ship with two other men from Taraak, the doctor Duero McFile and the navigator Bart Garsus, who serve as his uneasy allies and fellow outsiders in the female-dominated environment.

Hibiki undergoes significant development, particularly in The Second Stage. He moves closer to his goal of proving his existence, not just through grand gestures, but by becoming a vital and trusted member of the crew. The most notable change is in his relationship with Dita; he stops seeing her as merely an annoying UFO girl and begins to rely on and care for her, finally accepting the romantic feelings he had long denied. He remains a character who can be rash and prideful, but these traits are tempered by a growing sense of responsibility and loyalty to his new comrades.

Notable abilities include his superior piloting skills in his humanoid Vanguard mecha. He is a close-range fighter, preferring to engage enemies with a large sword, which contrasts with the long-range focus of the female pilots. His technical background as a mechanic also gives him a deep understanding of his machine, a skill that proves useful on several occasions. Beyond his combat prowess, his growth as a strategist is hinted at, and his most powerful ability is his capacity to fuse his Vanguard with the Dreads to form the Vandreads, a power that is essential to the crew's survival and victory against their enemies.
