Description
Hanamichi Sakuragi is the protagonist of the story and a first-year student at Shohoku High School. He is a tall teenager with bright red hair, standing approximately 189.2 centimeters tall and weighing around 83 kilograms, and he wears the jersey number 10 while playing the position of power forward.
Sakuragi’s background is that of a notorious delinquent and the leader of a small gang of loyal friends known as the Sakuragi Legion. Despite his fighting prowess, he has a disastrous romantic history, having been rejected by fifty different girls during junior high school. This history has left him with a deep sensitivity to rejection and a desperate eagerness to find a girlfriend. His initial hatred for basketball stems from his fiftieth rejection, as the girl confessed her love for a basketball player. His life changes when he meets Haruko Akagi, a kind and gentle girl who is a fan of the sport. Struck by her beauty, he falls for her instantly and, after discovering she loves basketball, lies about his skill level to impress her.
At the beginning of the series, Sakuragi is arrogant, hot-tempered, and dismissive of rules, regarding himself as a genius athlete. His primary motivations for joining the Shohoku basketball team are to win Haruko’s affection and to defeat his rival, the aloof and talented freshman prodigy Kaede Rukawa, who is the object of Haruko’s own affection and the target of Sakuragi’s intense jealousy. As the story progresses, his motivations evolve. While his crush on Haruko and his rivalry with Rukawa remain important drivers, he gradually develops a genuine and deep passion for basketball itself, ultimately realizing that he truly loves the game.
Despite his complete lack of experience, Sakuragi’s role on the team is initially that of an unpredictable but naturally talented novice. His incredible physical gifts, including immense jumping power, raw strength, speed, and stamina acquired from years of fighting, make him a formidable presence on the court. His most notable ability, which he develops under the harsh training of team captain Takenori Akagi, is rebounding. Sakuragi becomes known as the King of Rebounds for his uncanny ability to leap, position himself, and snatch the ball off the boards. Later, under the guidance of Coach Anzai, he adds a jump shot to his arsenal after making twenty thousand practice shots in a single week. However, his skills are initially limited; he is prone to fouling out of games, has poor on-ball defense, and can easily be tricked by feints.
His key relationships are central to his development. His dynamic with the captain, Takenori Akagi, evolves from open antagonism to a foundational mentor-student bond, with Sakuragi becoming a reliable pillar in the paint. His ferocious rivalry with Rukawa is the source of constant conflict and comedy, as Sakuragi constantly tries to outdo the silent ace. Yet, in the climactic final match, this rivalry transforms into a mutual, unspoken trust, culminating in a famous high-five that signifies their full acceptance of each other as teammates. He also forms strong bonds with point guard Ryota Miyagi and the sharp-shooting former MVP Hisashi Mitsui, solidifying the core of the Shohoku team.
Throughout the story, Sakuragi experiences profound development, transforming from a self-centered troublemaker who only cares about glory into a dedicated team player who fights for every possession. A pivotal moment occurs in the intense national tournament match against the defending champions, Sannoh. After suffering a serious back injury from a heroic save, Sakuragi refuses to be benched, declaring that his moment of glory is now and that he loves basketball more than ever. He makes the game-winning buzzer-beater jump shot but suffers a severe spinal injury as a result. Following Shohoku’s subsequent loss in the next round, the series concludes with Sakuragi beginning rehabilitation for his back, determined to return to the court stronger than before.
