Description
Hige is one of the four central wolf protagonists in the narrative. He is a male wolf of a somewhat stocky or rounded build, with light sandy brown or tawny fur and golden-yellow eyes. When he assumes a human guise to move through society undetected, his appearance is casual and unassuming, typically characterized by messy hair and a relaxed style of dress that mirrors his personality. His most notable physical feature is a leather collar he always wears, which bears a metal plate marked with the letter X, designating him as Number 23.

Hige possesses a personality that stands in stark contrast to the often grim and serious tone of his world. He is the most easygoing, humorous, and sociable member of his pack, frequently providing moments of levity with his love for food and his interest in pursuing pretty women. This laid-back and sometimes gluttonous demeanor makes him seem unreliable at first glance, but this perception is deceptive. Beneath his carefree exterior, Hige is deeply loyal, surprisingly sensible, and remarkably reliable when circumstances demand it. He is a strategic thinker who prefers to plan and use his wits rather than rush headlong into a fight, acting as a grounding presence for his more impulsive companions. Although he appears detached, he is fiercely protective of those he considers his pack, and his emotional bonds run very deep.

Before joining the quest, Hige had spent a long time living among humans, learning how to survive by blending in and using his cunning. His past, however, is shrouded in a dark secret that he has completely forgotten. He was originally one of many wolves raised by a powerful Noble, Lady Jaguara. As part of a systematic plan to eliminate all wolves, these wolves were fitted with specialized collars that functioned as tracking devices and memory suppressants before being released. Hige, with his memories erased, unwittingly served as a tool for Jaguara, the collar allowing her forces to track and exterminate other packs. This explains his inexplicable familiarity with the Lost City of Jaguara and the severe migraines he suffers whenever he tries to recall his past. This tragic background makes him an unwilling traitor to his own kind, a revelation that deeply shakes him and his companions.

Hige's primary motivation initially is simple survival and enjoyment, but he is drawn into the larger quest for Paradise when he helps the white wolf Kiba escape from a research facility. Finding the idea intriguing, he agrees to accompany Kiba out of curiosity and a sense of friendship, though he is much less fervent about the journey than the zealous Kiba. As the story progresses, his motivations evolve from self-interest to profound loyalty and love. He forms a key relationship with Kiba, being his first companion and a steadfast, if less serious, foil. He shares a deep and complex bond with Tsume, often clashing with the aggressive, lone wolf's harsh attitude but ultimately earning his respect. He acts as an older brother figure to the younger, more naive Toboe. His most significant relationship is with Blue, a half-wolf, half-dog who was originally an enemy. Hige is captivated by her immediately and remains devotedly by her side, patiently breaking down her emotional walls and helping her find her place. This romance is a central part of his development, showing his capacity for deep tenderness and commitment.

Throughout the journey, Hige undergoes substantial development. He transforms from a self-serving survivor who used his human guise merely for convenience into a selfless and heroic member of a true pack. The shattering discovery that his own collar marked him as an instrument of betrayal forces him to confront his identity and choose who he truly wants to be. He demonstrates his growth by actively turning against Jaguara, embracing full responsibility for his actions and loyalty to his friends. His abilities are as notable as his personality. He possesses an extraordinarily keen sense of smell, which he often boasts can detect scents from vast distances, making him the pack's primary tracker and scout. This acute sense, combined with his long experience navigating human cities, makes him invaluable for reconnaissance and survival in urban environments. In the end, Hige is a character who proves that a warm heart, humor, and unwavering loyalty are as vital to a pack as strength and ferocity.
