Description
Kei Kishimoto is a central character in the Gantz storyline, appearing during the initial missions faced by the Tokyo team. She is a young girl with a notably curvaceous figure, large breasts, and short pink or brown hair, depending on the representation.
Kishimoto first enters the narrative after a failed suicide attempt, having slit her wrists in her bathtub due to immense stress placed on her by her mother, who demanded academic excellence and frequently compared her unfavorably to her brother. Unbeknownst to the mysterious black sphere known as Gantz, Kishimoto’s original body survived the attempt and was recovering in a hospital. Consequently, Gantz created a duplicate of her, teleporting this copy—naked and confused—into the room where the hunts begin, resulting in the existence of two identical Kishimotos.
Initially disoriented and vulnerable, Kishimoto displays a gentle and kind-hearted nature. However, she is also quite naive and somewhat clueless in social situations, particularly around boys, which often leads to unintended misunderstandings. Despite her initial meekness, her time within the Gantz program sparks a profound internal change. Finding herself free from the oppressive life she once knew, she develops a new respect for her own existence and resolves to continue living.
Her primary motivation becomes protecting the people she cares about, specifically Masaru Kato, who saves her from being assaulted by a yakuza member during her first moments in the Gantz room. She quickly falls in love with Kato and frequently speaks of him, much to the irritation of the other protagonist, Kei Kurono, who develops feelings for her. This creates a complicated dynamic, as she takes up residence in Kurono’s apartment after being unable to return to her own home, yet her romantic affections remain fixed on Kato.
In the role of a hunter, Kishimoto initially shows little initiative and is reluctant to engage in combat, even attempting to run away during her first mission. However, her behavior shifts drastically when she perceives that Kato is in danger, prompting her to become actively involved in the hunts. She learns to use the standard X-gun and harnesses the enhanced physical abilities granted by the Gantz battle suit, though she demonstrates no innate combat skills or strategic thinking.
Her character arc culminates in a significant act of sacrifice during the mission at the Buddhist temple. When the powerful alien known as the Thousand-Armed Kannon unleashes a corrosive liquid attack aimed at Kato, Kishimoto selflessly throws herself in front of him. She takes the full brunt of the fatal attack, and as she dies in Kato’s arms, she confesses her love for him. This death marks the end of her direct involvement in the main storyline, though her memory and the unique circumstances of her duplicated existence continue to have thematic resonance. Her abilities remain consistent with a novice hunter, relying on the suit for superhuman feats and basic weaponry, with her most notable act being one of protection rather than aggression.
