Description
Judeau is a member of the Band of the Hawk and one of Griffith's earliest and most loyal followers. Before joining the mercenary group, he worked as a tumbler and performer in a traveling circus troupe, a background that honed his agility and his exceptional skill with knives. He is of relatively short stature, with dull blonde hair typically tied in a low ponytail and blue eyes, and is eighteen years old. Judeau possesses a kind, easygoing, and welcoming personality, making him one of the first members to befriend Guts and help him integrate into the band. He is perceptive and emotionally intelligent, capable of reading the suppressed feelings of those around him, and he consistently puts the well-being of his comrades before his own. A defining aspect of his character is his acute self-awareness; he accepts that he is a "master of none" and will never be the best at any single thing, but he is nevertheless adept at many diverse skills. This realization initially drew him to follow Griffith, as he resolved to fight for someone who seemed to be the best since he could not be the best himself. In the story, Judeau serves as a vital support member of the Hawks, acting as a calm and rational presence who often mediates conflicts. He is deeply insightful about the group's dynamics, particularly the growing bond between Guts and Casca, and he analyzes Griffith's political ambitions, explaining to Guts that the leader's path to power lies through Princess Charlotte. His most significant personal motivation is his unrequited love for Casca. Rather than acting on his own feelings, he respects and encourages the relationship developing between her and Guts, hoping only for her happiness. After Griffith's capture and torture, Judeau remains fiercely loyal, becoming one of the group's leaders alongside Casca. He takes part in the dangerous mission to rescue Griffith from the Tower of Rebirth, where his quick thinking and skills are essential for survival. Judeau maintains a close friendship with Guts, acting as a confidant who offers practical advice and emotional support, and a deep respect for Casca as both a commander and the woman he loves. His character develops through his silent endurance and selfless service; he never pursues his own desires, instead dedicating himself to protecting the Hawks' future. During the Eclipse, when the band is sacrificed, he prioritizes Casca's survival, acting on his belief that the Band of the Hawk will continue to exist as long as she lives. He fights desperately to protect her from apostles, shielding her at the cost of his own life. As he succumbs to his mortal wounds, his final, unspoken regret is his failure to confess his true feelings to her. Judeau is not a frontline powerhouse but a highly skilled and versatile fighter. His notable abilities include masterful throwing knife accuracy, proficiency with a short sword, and use of a repeating crossbow. He also possesses practical knowledge, including the use of elf dust, a rare healing powder he acquired during his circus days, which he provides to help heal the wounded Guts. His analytical mind and deductive reasoning make him an effective strategist in combat situations. After Judeau's death, Guts carries a bandolier of throwing knives and uses them in the same manner, continuing a legacy of the fallen comrade.
