Description
Ginji Amano is one of the two central figures in the Getbackers recovery service, known as the G in the duo. He was formerly the feared Lightning Emperor, also known as Raitei, and the leader of a powerful gang called the VOLTS within the dangerous and lawless district known as the Infinity Fortress. Little is known about his earliest past, but it is established that his childhood guardian was a man named Takeru Teshimine, the then-ruler of the Infinity Fortress. Before Teshimine's departure, Ginji founded the VOLTS to protect the lower levels of the Fortress from the monsters of the Beltline, a dangerous middle area. He later chose to leave the Infinity Fortress with his partner, Ban Mido, and together they formed the Getbackers retrieval service.
In direct contrast to his fearsome reputation as the Lightning Emperor, Ginji's outward personality is that of an unassuming, energetic, and exceptionally friendly young man with a powerful sense of justice. He is trusting and open to an almost naive extent, making friends easily and often without even trying. He is affectionate, often disregarding the concept of personal space, especially with those he is close to, and is known to be clingy and quick to express his emotions. For comedic relief, he frequently transforms into a small, droopy, super-deformed version of himself known as chibi-form, which resembles a tarepanda. In this state, he is often comically beaten up by his partner Ban for saying or doing foolish things, such as confusing famous statues or landmarks. Despite his cheerful demeanor, Ginji is haunted by memories of his violent past and the destruction his other self has caused, a guilt that is a major source of his inner anguish. He also possesses a notoriously poor sense of direction, to the point of getting lost even in territory he once ruled.
Ginji's primary motivation stems from a deep-seated desire to protect others and a hatred of injustice. This compassionate drive was the very reason he formed the VOLTS, to bring order and safety to the chaotic slums of the Infinity Fortress. He left the fortress because he was afraid of his own power inadvertently destroying the tower that housed all of his friends. His goal as a Getbacker is not just to recover lost items for clients but also to use his abilities to help people and fight for what is right, often serving as the heart of the operation while Ban provides the strategic mind.
Within the narrative, Ginji serves as one of the two main protagonists. His role is often that of the front-line fighter, using his electrical abilities in combat. His deep bond with his partner, Ban Mido, is central to the story; the two share a profound trust and a seemingly psychic link that allows them to sense when the other is in danger. Ban is also the only person known to have defeated Ginji in his Raitei form. Other key relationships include his ties to the Four Kings of the VOLTS: Shido Fuyuki, Kazuki Fuuchouin, Makubex, and Masaki Kurusu, whom Ginji considers the older brother he never had. He also shares a significant connection with his childhood friend, Kana Kurusu, for whom he harbors romantic feelings.
Ginji undergoes significant development throughout the story, primarily concerning his dual identity. His alter-ego, the Lightning Emperor Raitei, is the polar opposite of his usual self—cold, merciless, and devoid of emotion, with no qualms about killing. This persona was born from a traumatic childhood event when he witnessed a friend being killed by invaders, causing him to unleash his power and annihilate the entire attacking force in an instant. Whenever Ginji is pushed to his emotional or physical limits, Raitei emerges to make whatever is troubling him disappear, often through destructive means. However, this transformation is fraught with danger; if Raitei rampages for too long, there is a risk that Ginji may never be able to revert to his original self. Later in the manga storyline, particularly during the Kiryuudo arc, Ginji loses much of his electrical powers after a rampage and is forced to fight without them. During this period, he proves he is more than just raw power, developing his intuition and instincts to an incredible degree. He eventually has his powers restored by his friend Shido Fuyuki. As the story reaches its conclusion, Ginji confronts and defeats the Voodoo King, after which the Raitei persona seemingly disappears forever, leaving only Ginji. In the final arc, Ginji is even offered the chance to become the god of his world but ultimately chooses to return to his friends and the imperfect world he knows, valuing the bonds he has formed over an idealized peace.
Ginji's notable abilities center on the generation and manipulation of electricity. This control grants him several unique powers, including an impressive regenerative capability by using electricity to heal himself, and the ability to function as a human magnet or battery, allowing him to absorb electrical energy from external sources or power electronic devices. In combat, he typically charges his fists with electricity to enhance his punches or projects bolts of lightning at his opponents. Within the Infinity Fortress, his power is amplified as he can draw upon the limitless energy currents flowing through the tower. When he transforms into the Raitei, his abilities reach a much higher level. In this state, he glows with brilliant light, is surrounded by orbs of plasma, and can manipulate electromagnetic radiation across the spectrum, from microwaves to X-rays. The Raitei can even reduce targets to nothing on a molecular level and is a threat to the fortress itself because his existence is an anomaly in the city's prophetic archives. It has been revealed that this immense power was actually created by Ginji's mother, a professor with ties to the Infinity Fortress.
