Description
Inspector Ninzaburo Shiratori is a police officer in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, serving in the Criminal Investigation Division's First Investigative Division. He holds the rank of Inspector and is a colleague of Inspector Juzo Megure. Shiratori comes from a wealthy and affluent family, a background that often influences his refined tastes and interests, which include studying architecture, cooking, and collecting fine wines such as his favorite, Romane Conti.

His initial ambition was to become a lawyer, and as a child, he diligently studied and memorized laws. However, a chance encounter in a bookstore changed the course of his life. He witnessed a young girl bravely confronting two older boys who were attempting to steal manga. When the boys pushed her down, Shiratori stepped forward and used his knowledge of the law to intimidate them. To thank him, the girl bought him a drink and crafted a sakura petal pattern from the straw wrapper. She explained that the sakura flower is the symbol of courage for the Japanese police, as it adorns their badges. This incident inspired Shiratori to abandon his legal aspirations and become a police officer instead, with the girl becoming his cherished first love.

In his role as a police officer, Shiratori is generally calm and methodical, often appearing more composed than his more impulsive colleagues like Wataru Takagi or Miwako Sato. He is a career officer, having passed the national public service examination, which marks him as an elite within the police force. While his deductive skills are competent and he contributes meaningfully to investigations, he can sometimes come across as arrogant or conceited, particularly when he feels his status or knowledge surpasses that of others. He is known to be a poor marksman, a notable weakness for a detective.

For a significant period, Shiratori’s personal motivations were dominated by his search for his childhood love. Upon meeting his colleague Miwako Sato, he became convinced she was the girl from the bookstore due to her strong resemblance to his memory. This led to a long-running romantic rivalry with fellow officer Wataru Takagi, who also harbored feelings for Sato. Shiratori would often use his wealth and status to try and impress her, frequently inviting her to upscale restaurants and attempting to outshine Takagi. He even became the leader of a secret "Sato防线" (Sato Defense Line), a group of officers dedicated to protecting her from other suitors. Despite his persistent efforts, Sato consistently rejected his advances.

This rivalry and his fixation on Sato softened significantly after he met Sumiko Kobayashi, a teacher at Teitan Elementary School where Conan and the Detective Boys are students. Through a series of events involving sakura motifs, Shiratori realized that Kobayashi, not Sato, was his true childhood love. Once this misunderstanding was resolved, his competitive and arrogant demeanor subsided considerably. He developed a genuine and mutual romantic relationship with Kobayashi, which brought out a more modest and content side of his personality. With his romantic life settled, he also became noticeably friendlier and more patient with Conan and the Detective Boys.

Shiratori serves as a supporting figure within the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, often assisting Inspector Megure on major cases. His role is significant in providing a contrast to his colleagues and is central to several character-driven story arcs focused on the personal lives of the police detectives. He is a key figure in the "Metropolitan Police Detective Love Story" series of episodes, where his rivalry with Takagi was a primary focus. His character underwent a notable development from a wealthy, somewhat snobbish rival into a more empathetic and settled individual once he found his true love in Sumiko Kobayashi. His early appearances in the theatrical films established his character traits, and he was later integrated into the main manga and anime series.
