Description
Keitarô Urashima is a 20-year-old young man who serves as the main character of his story. He is introduced as a ronin, a student who has failed the entrance examination for the prestigious Tokyo University multiple times, specifically three years in a row. His academic struggles are compounded by poor study habits and a general difficulty grasping complex material, placing him at the bottom of his class in cram school. Financially strained and having been asked to leave his parents' home, he seeks the help of his grandmother, who offers him a position as the manager of the Hinata Inn.

The central driving force behind Keitarô's relentless pursuit of Tokyo University is a childhood promise made fifteen years prior. As a young boy, he vowed to a mysterious girl that they would both enter the same prestigious university together, believing it would ensure their happiness. Despite this strong motivation, he cannot remember the girl's name or face, clinging instead to the promise itself and a faint childhood memory. This dream becomes his identity, and his refusal to lower his sights is a core aspect of his character.

Keitarô is defined by a combination of seemingly contradictory traits. On the surface, he appears to be a perennial loser, plagued by terrible luck, an inability to find a girlfriend, and a pronounced clumsiness that leads to constant misunderstandings. His time at the Hinata Inn, which is now an all-female dormitory, is marked by a series of highly improbable and accidental events where he stumbles upon the residents while they are undressed or in the bath, leading to him being labeled a pervert. However, beneath this unfortunate exterior lies a genuinely kind, friendly, and remarkably determined individual. His intentions are almost always pure, and he acts selflessly, often going to great lengths to help the residents of the inn with their personal problems. Perhaps his most notable ability is his superhuman endurance. He withstands an incredible amount of physical punishment, including being punched across rooms by Naru, struck by Motoko’s sword and ki attacks, and caught in the explosions of Kaolla’s inventions, surviving with only minor injuries and earning him the nickname "Keitarô the immortal" among fans.

As the new manager, Keitarô's role in the story is to bring order to the inn while navigating the hostile reactions of its residents, who initially reject his presence. His primary relationship is with Naru Narusegawa, a brilliant but volatile student who is also aiming for Tokyo University. Their dynamic is the story's focal point, characterized by extreme violence from Naru whenever Keitarô finds himself in an accidentally compromising position, balanced by a slowly developing mutual respect and affection. Keitarô initially suspects Naru is the girl from his promise, and their shared goal forms a powerful bond between them. He also develops significant relationships with the other residents. He shares a deep, almost fraternal bond with Mutsumi Otohime, a sickly and clumsy young woman who is also connected to his past and is often called the female version of him. His persistent kindness and determination gradually earn him the grudging respect and hidden affection of Motoko Aoyama, a swordsman who initially despises him for his perceived weakness and perversion. Shinobu Maehara, the youngest resident, develops a serious crush on him because of his gentle and kind nature towards her.

Over the course of the narrative, Keitarô undergoes significant development. He begins as a passive, directionless dreamer with low self-esteem, but his experiences at the Hinata Inn force him to grow. He learns to take charge of his life and build genuine self-confidence, which positively impacts his academic and personal prospects. He eventually begins to question his original motivation, realizing that a relationship in the present is more important than a promise from the past. This newfound maturity helps him discover a true calling in archaeology, leading him to become an assistant to the archaeologist Seta, a role he takes on with great enthusiasm. By the end of his journey, he has successfully passed the Tokyo University entrance exam and, having resolved the mystery of his childhood promise, is ready to build a future based on his own choices and the real connections he has formed.
