Description
Johnny is a former bounty hunter and a notable supporting character from the East Blue Saga, recognized for his close friendship with Roronoa Zoro. Standing at 186 centimeters tall and 25 years old during his initial appearance, his most distinctive physical feature is the character for "sea" tattooed on the right side of his face. He is almost always seen with his partner, Yosaku, and the pair are rarely apart.

In terms of personality, Johnny is generally happy-go-lucky and good-natured, possessing a strong sense of honor and loyalty. He has a tendency to act silly, especially around his partner Yosaku, and can be somewhat dim-witted, often being misinformed or exaggerating the truth about certain subjects, such as claiming the legendary swordsman Dracule Mihawk was a regular at a sea restaurant. Despite his casual demeanor, he has a serious side and is known for his strong commitment to his friends. He can be cowardly, with a strong survival instinct that sometimes leads him to prioritize safety, but when his sense of justice is provoked or a friend is in danger, he demonstrates considerable bravery. This was evident when he charged into a fight to defend a child against a bandit, seeing his own younger self in the child’s courage.

Johnny’s primary motivation is rooted in his past; as a child, his village was attacked by bandits, and he was inspired by the bounty hunters who came to their rescue. This experience drove him to become a bounty hunter to protect others. His role in the larger story is mainly as an ally to the Straw Hat Pirates during the East Blue Saga. After the crew inadvertently injures Yosaku with a stray cannonball, Johnny confronts them, only to discover Zoro has joined Luffy's crew. Following this, he and Yosaku guide the Straw Hats to the Baratie restaurant to find a cook. He plays a more active part during the Arlong Park conflict, where he and Yosaku ultimately entrust Zoro with their own swords to replace the ones broken by Mihawk, allowing Zoro to continue fighting.

The most significant relationship in Johnny's life is with Roronoa Zoro, whom he deeply respects and refers to as "Aniki," a term for an older brother. He and Yosaku were formerly Zoro's partners in bounty hunting, and they hold his strength in the highest regard. He extends this respectful suffix to all members of the Straw Hat crew, calling them things like "Luffy-aniki" or "Nami-aneki". His bond with his partner Yosaku is inseparable; they live and work together, sharing both silly antics and a deep mutual loyalty. Throughout the Arlong Park arc, Johnny experiences development as his perception of Nami shifts from suspicion to understanding after hearing her tragic history, which fuels his determination to help her despite being outmatched. After the defeat of Arlong, Johnny and Yosaku eventually give up bounty hunting due to constant failures and become fishermen in Cocoyasi Village.

As a bounty hunter, Johnny wields a curved sword and possesses abilities that are greater than an ordinary person. However, his skills are significantly outclassed by powerful opponents like Zoro or the fish-man Arlong, who considered him not even worth killing. He and Yosaku are frequently defeated in combat, highlighting that their true value lies in their loyalty, resourcefulness, and willingness to support their stronger allies rather than their direct combat prowess.
