Description
Sakazuki, known by his former admiral alias Akainu, is the Fleet Admiral of the Marines, the organization’s highest authority. Born in the North Blue on August 16, he joined the Marines alongside his future colleague Borsalino (Kizaru) as part of a generation of recruits that included Monkey D. Garp. As a young man, he studied under the former instructor Zephyr and wielded a katana before fully relying on his Devil Fruit powers. Twenty-two years before the present storyline, he held the rank of vice admiral and participated in the Buster Call on Ohara, where he ordered the destruction of a civilian evacuation ship on the chance it might be harboring a scholar, a decision that horrified his fellow officer Kuzan (Aokiji). Akainu embodies Absolute Justice, an extreme and ruthless philosophy demanding the complete eradication of all evil, regardless of the cost. He believes any action taken in the name of justice is justified, including the sacrifice of innocent lives or the killing of his own soldiers if they show cowardice. He has a grim, stern demeanor and shows no mercy toward enemies, viewing all pirates as irredeemable criminals. He is also a skilled manipulator, willing to use lies and deceit, as when he tricked the Whitebeard Pirates’ ally Squard into betraying his captain. Despite his fanaticism, he has shown restraint: he chose to arrest Jewelry Bonney rather than kill her, and he stood down rather than engage the Red Hair Pirates in a new war. His primary motivation is to impose order by cleansing the world of criminal elements, with a particular fixation on eliminating the bloodlines of Gol D. Roger and Monkey D. Dragon, viewing their children as inherent threats. This drives him to seek the destruction of Portgas D. Ace and Monkey D. D. Luffy. During the Battle of Marineford, he played a pivotal role, killing a deserter, incinerating escaping pirates’ foothold, and fatally wounding Whitebeard. His most infamous act was killing Ace: after Ace was freed, Akainu insulted Whitebeard to goad Ace into attacking, then easily won due to his magma’s superiority over fire. He then tried to kill Luffy, but Ace shielded his brother and suffered a fatal blow. Akainu relentlessly pursued Luffy, leaving a large burn scar on Luffy’s chest, and only stopped when Shanks intervened. Within the Marines, he is feared and despised by many colleagues for his merciless methods. His ideological clash with Aokiji came to a head after the war when the retiring Fleet Admiral Sengoku recommended Aokiji as successor, but the World Government favored Akainu. The two former admirals dueled for ten days on Punk Hazard, permanently altering the island’s climate: one half a fiery wasteland, the other a frozen tundra. Akainu emerged victorious, becoming Fleet Admiral, while Aokiji left the Marines. Two years later, Akainu’s appearance has changed: he now has a beard, a larger scar on his face and neck, a missing piece of his right ear, and he wears a white Fleet Admiral uniform with a flower-patterned shirt and his signature Marine cap. As Fleet Admiral, his role has become more administrative and political. He moved Marine Headquarters to the New World, oversaw the World Military Draft that brought in new admirals Fujitora and Ryokugyu, and deals with the fallout of the Seven Warlord system and growing threats. Akainu ate the Magu Magu no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit that lets him create, control, and transform into magma. His magma is so hot it instantly vaporizes massive ice and boils the sea; because it burns hotter than standard fire, it naturally defeats fire-based abilities. His signature attacks include Dai Funka (Great Eruption), a colossal magma fist; Ryusei Kazan (Meteor Volcano), a barrage of magma fists raining down; Inugami Guren, a dog-shaped magma hound; and Meigo (Hell Hound), a fast, claw-like magma thrust that can melt through an opponent’s body. He can propel himself by converting his lower body into magma, allowing him to erupt through the air or melt through the ground. He is also highly proficient in both Armament and Observation Haki. His physical endurance is immense: he survived a direct enraged attack from Whitebeard that cracked Marineford in half and continued fighting moments later, and he fought Aokiji for ten consecutive days without rest until the duel was decided. In the films, he appears as the Marines’ Fleet Admiral, mobilizing forces against threats such as the escapee Byrnndi World, observing the state of the world from headquarters, and clashing with his former instructor Zephyr, whose plan to destroy the Grand Line’s End Points he finds too extreme even by his own brutal standards.
