Description
Yûta began as a 15th-century fisherman. In the 1480s, driven by tales of immortality, he and two companions consumed discovered mermaid flesh. One transformed into a monstrous Deformed One, another died poisoned, while Yûta gained eternal life with no immediate outward change. He returned to normalcy, marrying and settling in a village. Over decades, his failure to age became evident, frightening his aging wife and ending their marriage. This spurred his centuries-long search for a mermaid who could reverse his immortality and restore his mortality.

For roughly 500 years, Yûta wandered Japan, encountering others altered by mermaid flesh. These experiences bred detached cynicism and weariness toward eternal life, yet he retained a fundamentally kind and protective nature. He actively intervened to prevent others from similar fates, often destroying remaining mermaid flesh or confronting those misusing it. By the 1980s, he found Mana, a young woman imprisoned by a village of aging mermaid-immortals planning to sacrifice her to regain youth. He rescued her after she was forcibly made immortal, and she became his companion. Her presence eased his profound loneliness, making his immortality less burdensome and reinforcing his resolve to protect the vulnerable.

Yûta's immortality grants permanent youth, rapid regeneration from injuries, and resurrection after death—though resurrection inflicts significant physical trauma. His vast lifespan endowed him with considerable knowledge and adaptability across eras. He sustains his travels with temporary labor jobs, like construction, avoiding long-term ties to mortals. His core motivation remains finding a way to become mortal again and live a natural lifespan.

In encounters like those involving Masato and Misa, Yûta demonstrates investigative instincts and a sense of duty to aid other suffering immortals. He deduced Misa's immortality after seeing her recover unnaturally from fatal burns and recognized the presence of Lost Souls. He shielded Masato from Misa's attack, later uncovering Masato's manipulation: the seemingly young boy was an 800-year-old immortal who had forcibly made Misa his surrogate mother during World War II. Yûta confronted Masato's cycle of exploiting women for a maternal figure, ultimately prioritizing Misa's safety and seeking to end Masato's threat.

His bond with Mana deepened on their journey. He exhibits fierce protectiveness toward her, valuing her as his sole equal in enduring immortality. While transcending conventional romantic or familial labels, their bond provides mutual emotional support against eternal isolation. Yûta remains committed to shielding others from mermaid flesh dangers, viewing it as a curse, consistently warning mortals of its risks and striving to eliminate existing sources.
