Description
In the anime Dragon Ball GT, Frieza appears not as a living threat, but as a denizen of Hell, revisiting his rivalry with Goku in the afterlife. His background as a galactic tyrant carries over from Dragon Ball Z. He is the emperor of a vast military force responsible for conquering and selling planets, and he is the son of King Cold. To prevent the prophecy of a Super Saiyan from coming true, Frieza destroyed Planet Vegeta, the home world of the Saiyans, an act that ultimately leads to his own downfall.

In terms of personality, Frieza remains defined by his sadistic cruelty, immense pride, and a deeply paranoid fear of the legendary Super Saiyan. A chilling contrast defines him; he often speaks with a calm, polite, and refined tone, even while committing horrific acts of violence. This demeanor masks a cold, calculating nature and a narcissistic belief that he is the rightful ruler of the universe. He enjoys making his enemies suffer and reacts with explosive rage when his superiority is challenged.

Frieza’s primary motivations throughout the series are the acquisition of immortality and the extermination of the Saiyans, specifically Goku. He seeks the Dragon Balls to make himself invincible and harbors an obsessive grudge against Goku for being the one to finally defeat him and for embodying the Super Saiyan legend he so fears. In Dragon Ball GT, his goal is no longer universal conquest but to exact revenge on Goku from beyond the grave.

His role in the story of Dragon Ball GT is that of a secondary antagonist and a cameo from the past. After Goku is tricked into being transported to Hell by the villains Dr. Gero and Dr. Myuu, Frieza is there waiting for him alongside another of Goku’s former enemies, Cell. Due to a dimensional disturbance caused by a fusion between the Android Seventeen of Hell and the real world, the barriers of the afterlife become unstable, granting Frieza and Cell immortal bodies. They attack Goku in an attempt to finally destroy him, serving as guardians of Hell for the saga’s villains.

Key relationships from the past continue to define the character. His hatred for Goku, the Super Saiyan who defeated him on Planet Namek, remains his primary driving force. His alliance with Cell is one of convenience, as they share a common enemy in Goku, but the two villains are shown to have little camaraderie. His father, King Cold, is also present in Hell, but Frieza's main interactions are with his fellow fallen antagonists.

In terms of development, Frieza’s arc in Dragon Ball GT is more of a coda than a transformation. He does not evolve emotionally or morally. Instead, his defeat in GT serves as a final, almost comedic end to his threat. After a brief confrontation, Goku manages to trap both Frieza and Cell in a freezing machine he finds in Hell. While Goku is distracted, he accidentally shatters the frozen Frieza and Cell, and it is stated that having been broken into pieces in the afterlife, their bodies cannot be restored, finally bringing a definitive end to their schemes. This episode highlights that the power he once wielded that terrorized the universe has been utterly surpassed and that his menace has been reduced to a minor obstacle.

Regarding notable abilities, Frieza brings his entire deadly arsenal to Hell. He has the power to survive in the vacuum of space. He possesses multiple transformations designed to suppress his true, immense power; his final form is his original state. His signature techniques include the Death Beam, a fast, pinpoint energy bullet fired from a finger, and the Death Ball, a large sphere of energy capable of destroying an entire planet. He is also able to fly and use telekinesis. In Dragon Ball GT, he fights with the immortal body granted by the dimensional rift, but does not display any new or enhanced powers beyond what he showed during his life in Dragon Ball Z.
