Ichigo possesses a vast and varied set of notable abilities. As a Soul Reaper, his primary weapon is Zangetsu, an oversized blade that resembles a giant cleaver. In its Shikai (initial release) state, it can unleash a powerful energy attack called Getsuga Tenshō, which fires concentrated spiritual pressure from the tip of the sword. Upon achieving Bankai, his sword compresses into a smaller, black katana that dramatically increases his combat speed. In this state, his Getsuga Tenshō becomes even more powerful.
