Description
Crow Hogan is a primary protagonist and one of Yusei Fudo's and Jack Atlas's closest friends from their childhood in the Satellite district. Orphaned as a young child during the Zero Reverse incident, Crow spent his early years surviving alone in Satellite, struggling to find food and shelter. He eventually discovered Duel Monsters cards, which he learned to play with a group of friends. This game helped him improve his basic reading and arithmetic skills. Through playing, he met Yusei and Jack, and the three formed a deep bond, growing up together as close as brothers under the care of their foster mother, Martha. During his teenage years, the three of them met Kalin Kessler and formed a Duel gang known as The Enforcers. Crow earned the nickname "Crow the Bullet" for his skills. The group eventually disbanded after Kalin's personality became dangerously cruel. Following this, Crow set up a hideout and began taking care of underprivileged children, stealing Duel Monsters cards to provide for them and teach them how to Duel, which earned him several criminal marks on his face.

Crow possesses an impulsive and daring personality, yet he is also selfless, generous, and altruistic. He is willing to fight for the sake of his friends and the children he considers his family. While he shares Yusei's heroic nature and desire to help others, Crow is more prone to acting on instinct and rising to any challenge. He is fiercely protective, particularly of the orphans in his care, and has been known to take desperate measures, such as threatening to use a bomb during a Duel to avenge them. Initially, his role in the story is somewhat limited when he first appears, but he becomes much more prominent over time, acting as one of the three main characters alongside Yusei and Jack.

Crow's primary motivation is to protect the people he cares about. He looks after the orphaned children of Satellite, determined to give them a better life than the harsh one he experienced. He also holds a strong sense of loyalty to his friends, refusing to let Yusei face dangers like the Dark Signers alone. In the manga, his motivation is more specifically to win the D1 Grand Prix to encourage his younger brother, Yoshi, to undergo a life-saving operation.

Throughout the story, Crow is a crucial ally to Yusei. He reunites with him upon Yusei's return to Satellite and immediately joins the fight against the Dark Signers. He becomes the first non-Signer to defeat a Dark Signer in a Shadow Duel when he avenges the children of Satellite by defeating Greiger. Crow later becomes a Signer himself, bearing the Tail Mark of the Dragon. He continues to fight alongside his friends as a member of Team 5D's in the World Racing Grand Prix.

Crow's key relationships are central to his character. His bond with Yusei Fudo and Jack Atlas is like that of brothers; they grew up together, and he trusts them implicitly. Despite conflicts, such as when Kalin became corrupt as the leader of The Enforcers, Crow still tried to help him and was deeply affected by his fall. He has a surrogate familial relationship with Martha, who raised him. He also shares a strong connection with the children he protects, acting as their guardian and mentor, and with the Duelist Robert Pearson, who inspired him and bequeathed him his Duel Runner, the Blackbird, and the powerful card Black-Winged Dragon.

Over the course of the series, Crow develops from a lone-wolf caretaker stealing to survive into a fully integrated and trusted member of Team 5D's. His skills as a Duelist are consistently tested and honed against increasingly powerful foes. Demonstrating his growth, eight years after the main events, Crow recognizes when his time with his team has run its course and decides to move on to pursue his own path as a full-time Duelist.

Crow is a highly skilled Turbo Duelist known for his aggressive, swarm-based tactics. He pilots a custom Duel Runner named the Blackbird, which features retractable wings. His signature Deck is a Blackwing deck, centered on the Dark attribute and Winged Beast-type monsters. This deck focuses on quickly summoning multiple monsters to perform Synchro Summons. His ace monsters include Blackwing Armor Master and, later, the powerful Black-Winged Dragon, which was hidden inside his Duel Runner for him to discover.
