Description
Abandoned as a child in Aomori, Japan, due to her uncontrollable Reishi ability to involuntarily read minds and absorb others' negative emotions, manifesting them as destructive oni, Anna Kyoyama was discovered and adopted by Kino Asakura. Kino trained Anna as an itako—a traditional spirit medium—despite Anna retaining her sight, a rarity for the role. To preserve the Asakura shamanic lineage, Kino arranged Anna's engagement to her grandson, Yoh Asakura.

At age ten, Anna encountered Yoh at Mount Osore. Her uncontrolled emotions spawned an oni that attacked Yoh, though she instinctively halted its assault. Unfazed by her isolation, Yoh vowed to help her. During a New Year's temple visit, overwhelming crowds triggered Anna's powers, creating an Oh-Oni that kidnapped her. Yoh, aided by the spirit Matamune's sacrifice, defeated the creature. This act freed Anna from her curse, as her emerging love for Yoh overcame her hatred. The remains of the Oh-Oni were forged into her signature weapon, the 1080 beads.

Anna reappeared in Tokyo following Yoh's battle with Tao Ren, enforcing a rigorous training regimen to prepare him for the Shaman Fight tournament. Her methods, deemed torturous by others, stemmed from her belief in Yoh's potential to become Shaman King and her desire to repay him for saving her. She demonstrated her abilities by summoning spirits like Pyron's master to resolve battles and subduing Hao Asakura's shikigami guardians, Zenki and Goki, using the Demon Subjugation technique. She later wielded them as her own guardian spirits.

Her powers included summoning spirits from any realm (Kuchiyose), reflecting curses (Juso-gaeshi), nullifying furyoku-based attacks, and wielding Buddhist sutras like Sankiraimon to exorcise spirits. Though she lost her involuntary Reishi ability after learning to trust Yoh, she retained immense spiritual strength and physical prowess, notably her feared "right hand slap" and "phantom left hand slap."

Anna's relationship with Yoh was central. Though stern and possessive—she once assaulted him over a misunderstanding about another woman—she deeply loved him. She trusted his abilities, rarely showing concern during his battles except in extreme crises, like Tokageroh's possession or Hao's near-fatal attacks. Before Yoh departed for America, they slept together, later marrying and having a son, Hana Asakura. Her dynamic with Hao was complex; she despised him but intrigued him, partly due to her resemblance to his mother, Asano-Ha. Hao tolerated her defiance, including a physical slap, viewing her as a fitting Shaman Queen.

In later years, Anna adopted a calmer demeanor, growing her hair and exchanging her red bandana for a white one. Post-series, she trained Alumi Numbirch, the daughter of Patch Officiant Silva and sole survivor of the Patch Tribe, as an itako. An earlier incarnation, Anna I, appeared in the prequel Butsu Zone and Itako no Anna; this version moved to Los Angeles, became an actress, and provided intelligence to the Asakura family during the Shaman Fight. Anna I also trained Alumi, continuing the legacy.
