Description
Ryo Asuka masquerades as a half-Japanese, half-Caucasian young man with blonde hair, blue eyes, and a tall, lean build, typically dressed in a tan trench coat or white suit over striped or plain shirts. This human identity conceals his true nature as Satan, the fallen archangel Lucifer, who assumed the persona after the real Ryo Asuka died in a car accident, facilitated by memory manipulation from the demon Psycho Jenny.

In his true form, Satan possesses an intersex physique with both male and female characteristics, including visible breasts and genitalia, and twelve golden wings arranged as eight on the back, two on the head, and two on the ankles. While this form blends gendered attributes, Satan consistently adopts male human disguises, except when splitting into male (Ran Asuka) and female (Jun Fudo) halves.

Originally God's emissary Lucifer, he rebelled against the planned extermination of demons billions of years ago. During the conflict, Lucifer merged with his pegasus and the human experiment Yuria, forming the new entity Satan. This fusion shifted his consciousness, replacing contempt for demons with sympathy and motivating his rebellion. Defeated, Satan and surviving demons entered cryogenic hibernation within Earth's ice.

Awakening in the modern era, Satan despised humanity's impact. To infiltrate society, Psycho Jenny erased his memories and implanted those of the deceased Ryo Asuka. Living as Ryo, he researched human vulnerabilities while unconsciously aiding demons. During this time, he befriended Akira Fudo, developing genuine, though unexpressed, romantic feelings that endured even after regaining his memories.

As Ryo, his personality blended intensity and stoicism with dry humor. He orchestrated Akira's fusion with the demon Amon at a Black Sabbath ritual, believing only Akira's pure heart could control demonic power. Though protective of Akira during their initial partnership fighting demons, Ryo grew increasingly pessimistic about humanity's survival.

His memories resurfaced upon discovering discrepancies in family photographs and records confirming Ryo's death. After Psycho Jenny restored his identity, Satan publicly revealed Devilman's existence without distinguishing them from hostile demons, inciting global hysteria and mass violence, including the death of Akira's friend Miki Makimura—a rival for Akira's affection whom Satan resented.

Satan's love for Akira initially drove his plan to spare him during the demonic takeover, but their opposing ideologies sparked a 20-year war. Satan viewed Devilmen as demons' evolutionary successors, while Akira defended humanity. After Satan killed Akira in their final battle, he recognized his genocide mirrored God's original sin against demons. God's angels descended to reset the world, leaving Satan in eternal grief.

In non-canonical appearances like CB Chara Nagai Go World, Ryo exhibits exaggerated traits such as homicidal tendencies and comedic interactions with characters from other Go Nagai works, while retaining his core relationship with Akira.
