Description
Oyamada Manta serves as narrator and the first human companion of Asakura Yoh. Hailing from the affluent Oyamada lineage, his father Mansumi oversees Oyamada Company, while Manta later ascends to CEO of Oyamada Logistics. His 80 cm (2'7") stature frequently leads to confusion with koropokkuru folklore spirits. Sandy-brown hair frames wide eyes with pinpoint pupils, complemented by outfits alternating between school uniforms and casual wear, including a signature baby-blue hoodie featuring angel wings and a halo.

Academically gifted, Manta carries the Manjien—a customized dictionary embodying his scholarly passion. Though lacking shamanic powers, his spirit perception evolves from paralyzing fear to routine awareness. His demeanor merges studious composure with animated responses to supernatural threats, yet he displays resolve when aiding Yoh against adversaries like gang leader Umemiya Ryunosuke or during Shaman Fight trials.

Pivotal moments begin when cemetery spirits draw him to Yoh, forging an alliance that withstands supernatural conflicts. Manta’s non-combatant role fractures during Faust VIII’s experiments, triggering Yoh’s protective fury. Post-tournament, he graduates from Shinra Private Academy, studies folklore, mythology, economics, and quantum mechanics at Harvard, and publishes *Day After Maize*, chronicling shamans’ post-Hao revival lives.

In later operations, Manta coordinates logistics for Daremoine, redirecting a pivotal ritual from Kyoto Tower to Tokyo Skytree amid clashes involving Yoh’s son Hana. The 2001 anime briefly grants him shamanic prowess via a laptop-fueled Oversoul with spirit Mosuke—a deviation absent in manga and 2021 adaptations. Family members like mother Keiko and sister Mannoko surface sporadically, with father Mansumi gaining minor narrative relevance.

Manta’s bond with Yoh matures from cautious curiosity to unwavering loyalty, tested when Yoh attempts sacrificial self-isolation—a move Manta fiercely rejects. His career and research, including a thesis merging shamanic principles with economic systems, highlight his role as an intellectual bridge between mundane and mystical realms. Despite lacking formal shaman training, his strategic insight and chronicling of spiritual events cement his narrative significance.
