Description
Ken Kaneki is the central protagonist of the sequel manga and anime Tokyo Ghoul:re. His journey is defined by a series of profound physical and psychological transformations, beginning as a gentle, bookish human before a fateful encounter alters his existence forever. Originally a university student with a quiet demeanor and a deep love for literature, Kaneki's life changes when he receives an organ transplant from a female ghoul named Rize Kamishiro after a critical accident. This surgery transforms him into an artificial one-eyed ghoul, forcing him to navigate a world where he belongs neither fully to humanity nor to the ghoul species. He stands at a height of 170 centimeters during the events of:re and has AB blood type. His physical appearance is highly symbolic, as his hair changes color from black to white and then to various combinations in response to immense trauma and psychological shifts.

In Tokyo Ghoul:re, Kaneki is introduced living under the new identity of Haise Sasaki, an investigator for the Commission of Counter Ghoul (CCG). After suffering severe injuries and memory loss, he is taken in by the legendary special class investigator, Kisho Arima, and given this new persona. As Haise Sasaki, he is the mentor of the Quinx Squad, a group of human investigators implanted with ghoul abilities. His personality during this period is more stable and nurturing, though he suffers from persistent headaches and inner conflicts caused by the suppressed memories of his former life as Ken Kaneki. He is kind and dedicated to his squad, displaying a strong sense of responsibility for their well-being. His motivations shift from personal survival to a desire to protect his new family and to serve as a bridge between humans and ghouls, all while grappling with his own fractured identity.

However, the repressed personality of Ken Kaneki inevitably re-emerges. Upon fully recovering his memories, he becomes known as the Black Reaper, a colder, more ruthless version of himself who continues working as a CCG investigator but with a detached, almost suicidal demeanor. This phase is characterized by an outward display of apathy and a willingness to employ extreme violence, representing the depression stage of his long-term grief over his lost humanity and the pain he has endured. His ultimate role in the story evolves further as he abandons the CCG, liberates ghouls from the Cochlea prison, and eventually assumes the mantle of the One-Eyed King, a legendary figure who seeks to create a world where ghouls and humans can coexist. His motivations crystallize around ending the cycle of hatred between the two species and protecting the few people he holds dear, including Touka Kirishima, whom he eventually marries.

Kaneki's personal development is the core of the narrative. He moves from a victim of circumstance into a proactive force for change, though this path is marked by repeated failures and immense suffering. His character arc can be mapped to the stages of grief, beginning with denial of his ghoul nature, anger and bargaining to gain strength, a deep depression as the Black Reaper, and finally acceptance of his dual identity as both human and ghoul. This acceptance allows him to finally find peace and define his own purpose. Key relationships heavily influence this development. His bond with Touka Kirishima, a ghoul he met at the Anteiku cafe, deepens into a romantic one; she becomes a source of stability and hope for him. His mentor, Kisho Arima, is both a father figure and a tragic adversary, representing the pinnacle of human strength against ghouls. His friendship with Hideyoshi Nagachika, his human best friend from childhood, serves as his emotional anchor and moral compass, even influencing his actions long after they are separated. His relationship with the Quinx Squad, particularly the gentle Saiko Yonebayashi, also shapes his identity as Haise and later as a leader.

As a fighter, Kaneki possesses remarkable abilities. He has a Rinkaku kagune, which manifests as red, scale-like tentacles from his lower back, notable for their high striking power and speed, though they are somewhat brittle compared to other kagune types. He also possesses a Kakuja, a more advanced and powerful form of kagune gained through cannibalizing other ghouls, which encases his body in a monstrous, centipede-like armor. His Kakuja initially causes him to lose his sanity, but he eventually learns to control it. Among his most notable abilities is an exceptionally powerful regenerative factor, allowing him to recover from wounds that would be fatal to ordinary ghouls, including regenerating entire limbs and surviving severe brain damage, though such extreme injuries can cause memory loss. Later in the:re storyline, he undergoes a terrifying transformation into a massive creature known as Dragon, a colossal Kakuja form that causes widespread destruction and emits a poisonous gas. Despite the immense power he accumulates, including an SS-rating from the CCG and the title of One-Eyed King, his greatest strength ultimately lies in his enduring will to survive and protect others.
