Description
Shinomori Aoshi leads the Oniwabanshū, a ninja group formerly serving the Tokugawa shogunate in the Edo period. He became Okashira at fifteen upon his mentor Kashiwazaki Nenji's (Okina) recommendation. After the Meiji Restoration, he refused government positions to stay with his struggling subordinates, leading them to serve industrialist Takeda Kanryū. This resulted in the sacrificial deaths of his four closest comrades—Beshimi, Hyottoko, Hannya, and Shikijō—protecting him from Kanryū’s betrayal. Their loss propelled him into a consuming quest to defeat Himura Kenshin, believing victory would grant him the title "strongest" and honor his fallen men.

Initially emotionally detached and analytical, his demeanor concealed profound loyalty and compassion for his comrades. He helped raise Makimachi Misao from childhood, displaying protective though reserved guardianship. While Misao developed romantic feelings for him, his reciprocal sentiments remain undefined, though he consistently prioritizes her safety.

Following his defeat by Kenshin in Tokyo, he isolated himself for intensive training, adopting a dual-kodachi fighting style once used by the former Oniwabanshū commander. He later allied with antagonist Shishio Makoto in Kyoto for another chance to fight Kenshin. During this alliance, he severely injured Okina and nearly severed ties with the remaining Oniwabanshū; Misao witnessed this and renounced him temporarily. His rematch against Kenshin ended in decisive defeat, and Kenshin’s counsel led him to recognize how his vengeance dishonored his comrades' sacrifice, halting his descent.

In the Jinchū arc, he returned to Tokyo with Misao to deliver Yukishiro Tomoe’s diary, aiding Kenshin against her brother Enishi. He deduced Enishi faked Kaoru’s death using a doll crafted by puppeteer Gein, whom he defeated. He joined the assault on Enishi’s stronghold, neutralizing one elite guard. After Enishi’s defeat, he fulfilled a promise to share tea with Kenshin, symbolizing reconciliation and his commitment to peace. He resumed leading the Oniwabanshū, managing the Aoiya inn in Kyoto and tending to his comrades' graves with Misao.

His combat emphasizes precision, speed, and analytical prowess, employing kenpō alongside kodachi techniques. Signature moves include Goko Joji, Ryūsui no Ugoki, and Kaiten Kenbu Rokuren. His senses allow minute spatial calculations and detection of distant sounds.

In live-action adaptations, his comrades died by government guards instead of Kanryū, intensifying his isolation before joining Shishio. Post-redemption, he avoids alcohol due to low tolerance, preferring tea, and dedicates himself to meditation and atonement for his vengeful actions.
