Yoshito Yasuhara
Description
Yoshito Yasuhara is a highly accomplished Japanese actor, voice actor, and narrator. He was born on November 17, 1949, in Aioi City, Hyogo Prefecture. He is a graduate of Himeji High School, a school affiliated with Toyo University, and is married to fellow actress and voice actress Yuri Kimura. Yasuhara is affiliated with the theatre troupe and talent management firm Theatre Echo, where he has been a member since April 1969.
Yasuhara's career in the performing arts began after he moved to Tokyo following high school. He initially trained at the Gekidan Haiyuza training school for a year before becoming a member of that company. His decision to join Theatre Echo was influenced by their stage performances, and upon joining, he became a student of the renowned senior member, Yamada Yasuo. Yasuhara made his voice acting debut in 1970 with the Japanese dub of the American television series "Room 222". This was soon followed by his first anime roles, including a part in the 1971 series "Original Hero".
Throughout his extensive career, Yasuhara has built a remarkable filmography, lending his voice to a wide range of characters in both anime and dubbed foreign media. In anime, his work spans several decades. He is well-known for his role as Toshio Utsumi in the 1980s series "Cat's Eye". Other significant anime roles include Kenjiro Ota in the seminal "Space Battleship Yamato" series, Louis XVI in "The Rose of Versailles," and the Birdman in the 1983 version of "Perman". In more recent years, his roles include the powerful August in "Fairy Tail," the art appraiser James Coleman in "Great Pretender," Aldo Morini in "Violet Evergarden," and Jimmy Kurosaki in "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners". His filmography also includes major film roles, such as Louis in Hayao Miyazaki's "Castle in the Sky".
Beyond anime, a significant portion of Yasuhara's career is dedicated to voice-over work, known as fukikae, for foreign films and television series. He is particularly renowned as the regular Japanese dubbing voice for several major Hollywood actors, including Richard Gere, Mel Gibson, Mickey Rourke, Bill Murray, Gary Oldman, and Robin Williams. This aspect of his work is a testament to his versatility and enduring presence in the industry. For instance, he has dubbed Mel Gibson's performances in all the Blu-ray releases of the "Mad Max" series.
Yasuhara is also an active stage actor and has appeared in television dramas. A notable aspect of his career is his connection to his mentor, Yamada Yasuo. After Yamada's passing in 1995, Yasuhara inherited many of the stage roles and voice-over characters he had originated. His voice is characterized by its versatility, allowing him to portray comedic characters, which he is particularly skilled at, as well as冷酷 (cool-headed) antagonists and intellectual figures.
