Description
Ryūnosuke Fujinami is a major character raised as a male by her father, who desired a male heir for the family's beachside café, Hamachaya. This followed her mother's unexplained disappearance, leaving Ryūnosuke solely under his control. He enforced a masculine identity through physical discipline, masculine attire, and a male name, actively suppressing any feminine expression. This upbringing resulted in Ryūnosuke developing a rugged appearance, martial prowess, and mannerisms perceived as masculine, including a penchant for fighting and rough language.

Her father manipulated her life further by enrolling her as a male student after moving to Tomobiki and relocating to run the school store at Tomobiki High. He sabotaged her attempts at femininity, refusing access to female clothing like bloomers or a sailor uniform. He set challenges, such as defeating all male classmates in judo to earn bloomers, only to break his promises upon her victory. This reinforced his control and perpetuated their volatile relationship, marked by frequent physical confrontations. Ryūnosuke consistently rejected unearned feminine items on principle, insisting on winning them through combat with her father.

Despite this upbringing, Ryūnosuke persistently desired to embrace femininity, often expressing frustration with declarations like "I'm a woman!" This internal conflict led her to attempt mimicking feminine behavior, such as observing and emulating Ran's grace after an encounter left her awestruck. A subsequent date with Ran, who mistook her for a boy, ended awkwardly due to Ran's misconceptions and interference from others. Later, Ataru's misguided "lessons" in femininity backfired, deepening Ryūnosuke's insecurity about her inability to conform to traditional female norms.

Her appearance complicated social interactions: she attracted admiration from female classmates who perceived her as a handsome boy, leading to persistent misunderstandings. Ataru Moroboshi recognized her true gender but harassed her like other girls, often receiving physical retaliation. Ryūnosuke formed friendships with Shinobu Miyake and the alien Benten, though the latter involved rivalry over perceived masculinity. Notably, Ryūnosuke clarified she had no romantic interest in women.

Ryūnosuke demonstrated exceptional martial arts skills honed through lifelong combat with her father. Her strength was comparable to Shinobu's superhuman feats, enabling her to overpower male peers and even defeat a bear. In some adaptations, she possessed hybrid physiology granting kinetic energy absorption, superhuman strength (lifting 50–100 tons), and enhanced durability, though these traits were inconsistently portrayed.

Over time, Ryūnosuke gradually adopted a more feminine appearance, particularly towards the series' conclusion. Her design evolved to resemble Benten's, reflecting subtle progress against her father's influence. However, her core conflict—balancing ingrained masculine behaviors with her aspiration for conventional femininity—persisted throughout most narratives.
