Description
Ryōga Hibiki, a 16-year-old martial artist, stands as Ranma Saotome's primary rival. This animosity ignited in middle school when Ranma repeatedly beat him to the last piece of lunch bread. Fueled by these defeats, Ryōga challenged Ranma to a duel behind his own house. However, his severe hereditary directional impairment struck, causing him to arrive a day late after getting lost—reportedly as far as France. Discovering Ranma had departed for China, Ryōga pursued him. At Jusenkyo, a cursed Ranma accidentally knocked him into the "Spring of the Drowned Piglet," cursing Ryōga to transform into a small black piglet when splashed with cold water; hot water reverses the effect. Returning to Japan, he tracked Ranma to Nerima, seeking vengeance for the duel and his curse.

This directional curse afflicts his entire family, rendering him incapable of interpreting maps, following directions, or navigating even simple spaces. He frequently vanishes for extended periods, adopting a nomadic existence and rarely returning home. The impairment manifests differently across media: the anime exaggerates it comically with rapid continental traversals, while the manga depicts longer, more arduous journeys. His navigational failures often leave him isolated and vulnerable to wildlife. Despite this, he persists relentlessly toward goals, sometimes aided by his dog, Shirokuro.

Ryōga possesses significant strength and durability honed through harsh wilderness survival. He wears a distinct yellow tunic with a black sash, dark trousers featuring yellow ankle bands, and a speckled bandana covering his unkempt black hair. His cursed piglet form retains the bandana as a collar. When transformed, his clothes drop away, leaving him defenseless.

Emotionally volatile and naive, Ryōga habitually blames others—especially Ranma—for his misfortunes yet displays intense loyalty to those offering kindness. After Akane Tendo unknowingly adopted his cursed form ("P-chan") as a pet, her affection sparked his unrequited love for her. He exploited his pig form to share her bed, intensifying his rivalry with Ranma. Later, he met Akari Unryū, whose family trains sumo pigs; she admired his strength after he defeated her champion boar, Katsunishiki, and accepted his curse, leading to mutual affection that gradually eclipsed his feelings for Akane.

As a largely self-taught martial artist, Ryōga rivals Ranma in combat prowess, defeating or drawing with him multiple times. His signature techniques include the stone-shattering "Breaking Point," learned from a hermit, and the emotionally fueled "Shishi Hokodan," projecting chi from his depression. Despite his strength and durability, he is easily distracted, embarrassed by female nudity, and hindered by his curse during fights. He refuses to battle weaker opponents and demonstrates strategic skill when focused.

Across all media—manga, anime seasons, OVAs, films, and games—Ryōga participates in major arcs. He aids Akane in martial arts rhythmic gymnastics training, allies with Ranma against foes like Herb and Saffron, and seeks cures for his curse. In the manga's conclusion, he joins the group at Jusenkyo to remove curses, but Saffron's interference ruins the springs. After Ranma and Akane's wedding plans, he departs for Akari but immediately gets lost, returning to the Tendo dojo. The 2024 anime reboot faithfully adapts his introduction, emphasizing his grudge and combat role.
