Movie
Description
May grew up in Petalburg City, Hoenn, as the daughter of Gym Leader Norman and Caroline, with her younger brother Max. A childhood fear left her disliking Pokémon after her mother mistook her for a Tentacool and tried catching her with a Poké Ball. This made her view becoming a Pokémon Trainer mostly as a way to travel, not from interest in Pokémon themselves.
Meeting Ash Ketchum and Brock changed her path. Witnessing a Pokémon Contest during travels with them and Max sparked her ambition to become a Pokémon Coordinator, deepening her appreciation for Pokémon. Her journey involved collecting Contest Ribbons across Hoenn and Kanto, developing innovative battle combinations like the "Fire and Water Whirlwind" with Combusken and Squirtle. She also crafted unique Pokéblock recipes, though only her Munchlax enjoyed her "Purple Surprise."
She faced rivals including Drew, who initially criticized her lack of style but acknowledged her growth after she defeated him in the Kanto Grand Festival. Another rival, Harley, used underhanded tactics like public humiliation in contests, yet May persevered and defeated him. After losing to Solidad in the Kanto Grand Festival semifinals, May recognized her overreliance on Ash's offensive battle style. To forge her own approach, she departed alone for Johto, leaving Max behind to avoid dependence.
In the movie *Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea*, May played a central role while traveling with Ash, Brock, and Max. Encountering the Marina Group, a family of Water-type performers, led to her involvement in protecting the Mythical Pokémon Manaphy's egg from the pirate Phantom. The egg hatched in her arms, and Manaphy imprinted on her as its mother. May formed a deep bond, caring for Manaphy and aiding its protection during the mission to reach the undersea temple Samiya. During the climax, she helped reconnect the Sea Crown jewels to save the temple, ultimately deciding to return Manaphy to the ocean.
Later, during the Diamond and Pearl series, May reappeared in Sinnoh for the Wallace Cup. She revealed she had already earned three Johto Ribbons and showcased evolved Pokémon like Glaceon (from Eevee) and Wartortle (from Squirtle). She reached the finals but lost to Dawn. In this arc, she demonstrated refined contest strategies, such as creatively using Beautifly's Morning Sun, and formed new friendships with Dawn and Zoey. Her confidence was evident in her leadership during a tag battle with Dawn.
May's Pokémon team evolved: Torchic became Combusken, then Blaziken; Wurmple became Beautifly; she captured Munchlax and Skitty. In Johto, her Bulbasaur evolved into Ivysaur, then Venusaur; Squirtle became Wartortle. Her Eevee evolved into Glaceon near Snowpoint City.
She is cheerful, optimistic, and kind, with a love for food, fashion, and helping others. She can be fiercely protective of Max or her food. Despite occasional sibling quarrels, she deeply cares for Max and prioritizes his safety.
In *Pokémon Journeys: The Series*, May watched the Masters Eight Tournament with Max, Serena, and Lisia.
