Description
Paul is a Pokémon Trainer from Veilstone City in the Sinnoh region, where he appears as the main rival to the protagonist Ash Ketchum throughout the Pocket Monsters: Diamond & Pearl anime series. He is the younger brother of Reggie, a Pokémon breeder whose own travels inspired Paul to begin his journey. Paul received his first Pokémon, a Turtwig, from Professor Rowan in Sandgem Town, and before the events of the series he had already traveled through the Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn regions, competing in their Pokémon Leagues without winning. He is first glimpsed at the end of the episode Two Degrees of Separation! and is properly introduced in the following episode, When Pokémon Worlds Collide!.
Paul's personality is cool, strict, and highly pragmatic. He follows a strength-first philosophy, viewing Pokémon primarily as tools for achieving victory and measuring their worth almost entirely by their battling power. This outlook leads him to capture and immediately release Pokémon he judges to be weak; on one early occasion he caught three Starly at once, releasing two on the spot after checking them with his Pokédex and then releasing the third even after it won a battle. He also released a Stantler that knew only Tackle, gave away a Marill after it lost a Gym battle, and eventually abandoned his Chimchar after deciding it did not meet his standards. Paul is blunt and dismissive toward others, showing little patience for trainers he considers sentimental or unfocused, and his training methods are harsh compared with the more caring approach favored by Ash.
Paul's central motivation is simple and single-minded: he wants to become as strong as possible. He seeks out powerful opponents and refuses to waste time on battles or Pokémon he considers beneath him. His older brother Reggie once failed to defeat the Battle Pyramid leader Brandon, and this failure is suggested to have shaped Paul's belief that kindness and attachment are weaknesses that prevent a trainer from reaching the top. Paul's desire to surpass strong figures such as Brandon, the Champion Cynthia, and ultimately Ash drives much of his behavior throughout the series.
In the story, Paul functions as the primary rival who repeatedly challenges Ash's methods and beliefs. Their first battle, a three-on-three match, ends in a draw, establishing them as roughly equal in skill despite their opposite attitudes. Over the course of the series, Paul defeats Ash several times and frequently criticizes Ash for being too gentle with his Pokémon. A major turning point comes when Paul releases his Chimchar in front of Ash, and Ash accepts the Pokémon into his own team; the Chimchar later evolves into Infernape and becomes central to their rivalry. The relationship between Paul and Ash is the series' main source of conflict, as the two trainers embody opposing philosophies, with Paul favoring calculation and cold efficiency while Ash relies on trust and emotional bonds with his Pokémon. Paul also has a strained but meaningful relationship with his brother Reggie, who cares for some of Paul's Pokémon and represents a more compassionate path that Paul initially rejects. In the Sinnoh League at the Lily of the Valley Conference, Paul defeats the rival trainer Barry in the third round before facing Ash in the quarterfinals, where the two contest a full battle that lasts across multiple episodes and ends with Paul's narrow defeat.
Paul undergoes significant development through his losses and his rivalry with Ash. His defeat against Brandon, and his earlier loss to Champion Cynthia in a full battle, expose the limits of his approach and force him to reconsider his treatment of Pokémon. During his final battle with Ash, Paul shows uncharacteristic respect and persistence, refusing to give up even when his Pokémon are on the verge of fainting. After losing, he acknowledges Ash and Infernape with a faint smile and silently accepts Ash's offer of a rematch, departing to challenge Brandon once again. Later appearances show him continuing to grow, helping Ash prepare for a major tournament and eventually receiving an invitation to become a Gym Leader.
As a battler, Paul is highly skilled and methodical. He trains a large, rotating team of Pokémon and plans his strategies carefully around type matchups, abilities, and battlefield conditions, sometimes adopting tactics he has seen others use. He is also physically capable and athletic. His team includes some of his most powerful partners, such as his starter Torterra, his Electivire, which serves as his final and strongest Pokémon in his league battle against Ash, as well as Magmortar, Drapion, Ninjask, Aggron, Gastrodon, Froslass, Ursaring, Honchkrow, Weavile, Gliscor, Hariyama, and Nidoking. His command of this diverse roster, combined with his tactical mindset, makes him one of the most formidable trainers Ash faces in Sinnoh.
