Andromeda Shun is a Bronze Saint whose Cloth represents the Andromeda constellation. The younger brother of Phoenix Ikki, both were among the many children gathered by Mitsumasa Kido to train as protectors of the goddess Athena. From childhood, Shun avoided fighting, displaying notable sensitivity compared to other trainees and often relying on Ikki's protection. He trained on Andromeda Island under Cepheus Daidalos (or Cepheus Albiore in the anime), initially struggling but persevering with support from his training partner, Chameleon June. To earn his Cloth, he endured the "Sacrifice of Andromeda" trial, chained to cliffs by the sea. Unlike others who used strength, Shun freed himself through the power of his affection for Ikki.
Shun possesses a pacifist nature, preferring non-violent conflict resolution and fighting only when absolutely necessary or when his patience breaks. This contrasts with other Saints. Despite his gentle disposition, he ranks among the strongest Bronze Saints, capable of formidable combat. His appearance reflects the constellation's association with Princess Andromeda's beauty, often noted for his handsome features. In the manga, he has brown hair with reddish tones and blue eyes, while the anime depicts green hair and eyes. When possessed by Hades, his hair turns black and skin pales in the manga; the anime changes this to a reddish hue.
His primary weapon is the Nebula Chain, derived from the chains binding Princess Andromeda. These chains are highly durable, extend vast distances, and deliver electric shocks exceeding 10,000 volts when sensing threats. Techniques include the defensive Rolling Defense (creating barriers or circular webs), Thunder Wave (electrified strikes), and the offensive Nebula Storm, unleashing his full cosmos and reserved for dire situations due to its destructive power. Shun typically restrains his abilities to avoid killing opponents. During the Sanctuary arc, he awakened his Seventh Sense and defeated Pisces Aphrodite using Nebula Storm. His Cloth later became a God Cloth after Athena's blood blessed it.
In the Hades arc, Shun is revealed as the chosen human vessel for Hades, unknown to him initially. After Lyra Orphée's death, Hades possesses Shun's body in the Underworld throne room. Confronted by Ikki, Shun temporarily regains control, attempting to strangle himself while urging Ikki to destroy both him and Hades. Ikki's hesitation allows Hades to regain dominance. Athena's blood and encouragement later empower Shun to expel Hades. During the journey through the Underworld (Inferno chapter), Shun demonstrates maturity and strategic thinking, particularly alongside Pegasus Seiya. He interacts respectfully with figures like Charon, endures the Hall of Judgment, and protects Seiya from Pandora's trident. He also allows Hades to re-possess him to create an opening for Ikki to strike, showcasing self-sacrifice. Freed again, he prevents Seiya from a futile attack on the Wailing Wall. In Elysion, Shun participates in the final battle against Hades, Hypnos, and Thanatos, though his direct confrontation with Hades is minimal.
In "Next Dimension," Shun travels to the 18th century with Athena, encounters Pegasus Tenma, proves his identity as a future Saint, and is designated the future Virgo Gold Saint, succeeding Shaka. In "Saint Seiya Omega," Shun suffers a "dark wound" from the god Mars, spreading over his left arm and preventing cosmos use. He retires as a Saint, becoming a wandering doctor who aids new Bronze Saints like Ryūhō.
A Netflix adaptation gender-swapped the character into "Andromeda Shaun," a change criticized for undermining Shun's role as a non-stereotypical male character subverting traditional masculinity tropes. His gentle yet powerful portrayal resonated with LGBT audiences, who viewed him as queer-coded due to mannerisms and interactions. The alteration also created potential plot inconsistencies with the series' established mask rule for female Saints.
