Ran Mōri is the daughter of private detective Kogoro Mōri and lawyer Eri Kisaki. Her parents' separation when she was seven sparked her persistent efforts to reunite them. She first met Shinichi Kudo in kindergarten at Teitan School; their bond formed after he requested one of her handmade paper name badges. At age six, she and Shinichi investigated a monster rumor at Teitan Elementary School at night, encountering a mysterious figure who gave them a coded message. This shared experience cemented their friendship, leading Shinichi to address her by her first name without formal honorifics. Inspired by national karate champion Satoru Maeda at ten years old, she took up the martial art, eventually becoming captain of Teitan High School's karate club and winning regional tournaments in her age group. Approximately one year before Shinichi's physical transformation, Ran accompanied him to New York to visit his parents. During this trip, Shuichi Akai warned her about a local serial killer. Later, she and Shinichi saved a woman, actually Vermouth of the Black Organization in disguise, from falling to her death despite having been threatened at gunpoint moments earlier. This act earned Ran the nickname "Angel" from Vermouth and marked the moment she consciously recognized her romantic feelings for Shinichi. Following Shinichi's apparent disappearance after their visit to Tropical Land amusement park, Ran became the caretaker for Conan Edogawa, introduced by Professor Agasa as a distant relative. She developed a surrogate sibling relationship with Conan while remaining unaware of his true identity as Shinichi. She has periodically suspected Conan might be Shinichi but has been consistently diverted by alibis provided through various means, including assistance from allies like Ai Haibara and Kaito Kid. Her personality blends genuine compassion and nurturing instincts with a formidable temper when angered or when loved ones are threatened. She holds justice highly and chooses to wait for Shinichi's return despite the emotional strain, trusting his promise to come back. She demonstrates exceptional bravery facing armed assailants or fire, yet harbors an intense, irrational fear of the supernatural and horror elements that causes her to freeze despite her combat abilities. She acts as the primary manager of the Mōri household, handling finances, cooking, cleaning, and client hospitality due to her father's frequent drunkenness and irresponsibility. She remains largely oblivious to romantic attention from others, maintaining fidelity to her feelings for Shinichi. Physically, she has a fair complexion, stands approximately 160-165 cm tall with an athletic, curvaceous build. She possesses bluish-purple eyes and long, straight, dark brown hair reaching her hips, styled with distinctive wavy bangs that evolved into a triangular point as the series progressed. She is frequently noted for her beauty and has been scouted for modeling work. Her martial arts expertise as a karate black belt forms her primary skill set, enabling her to defeat multiple opponents efficiently, break solid objects like stone, and perform precise strikes. She demonstrates significant physical strength, prying open elevator doors or damaging a punching machine with a 400-point score. She possesses high agility, coordination, speed, and stamina, evidenced by dodging projectiles, performing acrobatics, and sustaining prolonged physical activity. Additional skills include proficiency in household management (sewing, cooking), musical ability (singing, piano), capable English language use, exceptional luck in games of chance, keen observational memory useful in investigations, and heightened senses in low-light conditions. In the events of the Black Iron Submarine movie, Ran is present at a resort on Hachijo-jima Island owned by Sonoko Suzuki's family. She becomes involved when the Black Organization kidnaps Ai Haibara. Ran participates in a confrontation with the organization member Pinga, engaging him directly in a martial arts fight sequence. Her protective nature extends to her concern for Haibara's safety during the ordeal. The film's plot revolves around an underwater facility, Pacific Buoy, featuring a facial recognition system capable of identifying individuals regardless of age changes, creating significant tension regarding Haibara's concealed identity.
