Description
Yusuke Urameshi starts as a 14-year-old delinquent at Sarayashiki Junior High, notorious for skipping classes, disrespecting authority, and indulging in vices while being feared for his fighting skills. His impulsive, rebellious nature stems from neglect by his alcoholic mother, Atsuko Urameshi, and an absent father. In a defining act, he sacrifices himself to save a child from an oncoming car, astonishing Spirit World authorities.
Koenma, heir to the Spirit World's throne, offers Yusuke resurrection if he proves his pure heart through trials. During this ordeal, Yusuke nurtures a Spirit Beast via emotional resonance and forfeits his revival chance to protect childhood friend Keiko Yukimura—a selfless act that secures his return as Spirit Detective. Tasked with investigating supernatural threats, his initial power is the Spirit Gun (Reigun), an energy projectile from his finger limited to one daily shot.
Training under martial arts master Genkai hones his abilities: he refines Spirit Energy control, develops techniques like the Spirit Gun "Shotgun," and inherits her Spirit Wave Orb after winning her tournament. As a resilient hand-to-hand fighter dubbed "Demon Slayer," he leads Team Urameshi—rivals-turned-allies Kazuma Kuwabara and reformed demons Kurama and Hiei—against threats like rescuing ice spirit Yukina and battling the Four Beasts.
In the Dark Tournament, demon Toguro challenges Yusuke's fixation on strength. Witnessing Genkai's death and inheriting her power accelerates his maturity, leading to Toguro's defeat and a warning about power's corruption. Later, predecessor Shinobu Sensui—traumatized by human cruelty toward demons—shatters Yusuke's black-and-white morality while plotting humanity's annihilation. Sensui kills Yusuke, awakening his latent demon heritage: a recessive gene from ancestor Raizen, one of the Demon Plane's Three Kings. Resurrected as a Mazoku hybrid, Yusuke gains long hair, tribal markings, and dual Spirit/Demon Energy.
In the Demon Plane, Yusuke trains under Raizen's followers after Raizen starves to death rejecting human consumption. Inheriting Raizen's territory, Yusuke proposes the Demon World Tournament to unify warring factions. Though defeated by ruler Yomi, he advocates recurring tournaments for balance. Post-series, he runs a ramen stand and fosters human-demon cooperation, reflecting his neutral stance on interspecies conflict.
Key relationships include his protective, romantically tinged bond with Keiko—often masked by humor—and his rivalry-turned-loyalty with Kuwabara. Kurama and Hiei become trusted allies, Genkai serves as his prime mentor, and Raizen's legacy pushes Yusuke to accept his dual heritage.
His appearance features black hair (typically slicked back), brown eyes, and a lean, muscular build. Outfits include a green jumpsuit, Dark Tournament red-copper jacket, and Demon World Tournament white keikogi. His Mazoku form adds distinct markings. Later OVAs like *Two Shot & All or Nothing* (2018) show him in a brown leather jacket.
