Description
Heiji Hattori is a 17-year-old high school detective from Osaka, famed as the "Detective of the West," a title countering Shinichi Kudo's "Detective of the East." The son of Osaka Prefectural Police Superintendent Supervisor Heizo Hattori and Shizuka Hattori, he inherited his dark complexion from his paternal grandfather. His detective ambitions began in childhood, finding lost neighborhood cats and honing exceptional kendo skills that made him a tournament contender for his school.

A childhood game with friend Kazuha Toyama involved handcuffing themselves together with old, keyless cuffs, forcing prolonged proximity, including during bathroom visits. After removal, Kazuha crafted two identical good-luck charms from the chain links, which both consistently wear. Heiji proudly speaks with a strong Osakan accent (Kansai-ben), often bragging about Osaka's superiority. His personality blends lightheartedness and impulsiveness with deep protectiveness toward friends. He typically wears an Osaka baseball cap backward, turning it forward when challenged. Though generally good-humored during investigations, his impulsiveness can cloud his judgment, noted by Saguru Hakuba when Heiji prioritized saving a victim over a crime scene during the Detective Koushien case. He strongly believes a detective's primary duty is to save lives whenever possible.

Heiji is intensely protective of Kazuha Toyama, frequently instructing her to avoid danger. He shares a close, brotherly bond with Shinichi Kudo, recognizing him as Conan Edogawa during their second encounter after discovering Conan's voice-changing bowtie. While he occasionally teases Conan by nearly revealing his identity—like mistakenly calling him "Kudo" in front of Ran—Heiji safeguards Shinichi's secret. He assists during Shinichi's temporary age reversals, disguising himself despite his unconvincing dialect. He considers Shinichi his best friend and partner, collaborating effectively on cases while maintaining a friendly rivalry. Heiji trusts Kazuha's charms more than he admits; after dreaming of Shinichi's murder, he insisted Conan wear his *omamori*, which later deflected a knife. Without the charm, Heiji was shot preventing a suicide.

His competitive nature surfaces in confrontations with Kaito Kid. Heiji participates in Kid's heists, like the pursuit of the "Seven Swords of Toushi" in *The Million Dollar Pentagram*, where Kid impersonated attendees to access treasure-linked swords. Heiji worked with Conan to solve the puzzle, disregarding Kid's impersonations despite personal animosity. Kid acknowledged Heiji's deductive abilities, though Heiji remained wary. During the *Detective Play Murder Case*, Heiji's father pressured Inspector Otaki to minimize casualties.

Heiji's relationship with his father, Heizo, is complex. Heizo outwardly criticizes Heiji's detective work as egotistical but secretly supports him, using him as bait in dangerous operations like the Tiger Scroll case while ensuring his safety. Heiji addresses his father informally ("Oyaji"), showing disregard for approval but benefiting from Heizo's sharp deductive skills, seen when Heizo solved the Yuki-Onna case remotely. Heiji inherited his kendo prowess from his mother Shizuka, a former champion still capable of subduing attackers. The family's friendship with Chief Ginshiro Toyama led to Heiji and Kazuha's lifelong closeness, with Ginshiro approving of their potential relationship.

Heiji drives a light green motorcycle and is right-handed. His full name references the fictional Edo-period detective Zenigata Heiji and the historical samurai Hattori Hanzo. He admires mystery author Ellery Queen.
