Description
Keisuke Sannan holds the position of Vice-Commander within the Shinsengumi, equal in rank to Toshizō Hijikata and subordinate only to Commander Isami Kondō. Hailing from Edo, he operates as a strategic advisor to the leadership. His scholarly demeanor is accentuated by round glasses and dark brown shoulder-length hair. He typically wears a dark green kimono shirt layered with a dark blue vest and black pants; his Rasetsu transformation manifests silver hair and crimson-glowing eyes.

Intelligent and soft-spoken, Sannan maintains a courteous exterior while weaving subtly incisive comments. He harbors intense disdain for pity, stemming from a debilitating sword arm injury sustained during an Osaka skirmish. This wound corrodes his self-worth, fueling irritability and isolation. Despite deepening cynicism, he preserves fierce loyalty to the Shinsengumi and profound respect for Hijikata, whom he considers a brother. A pacifist at heart, he rejects unnecessary violence against civilians or aggressive tactics, even when they might benefit the group.

After his injury, Sannan withdraws into clandestine research on the Ochimizu, an elixir created by Chizuru Yukimura’s father. Deeming it refined, he ingests the substance, transforming into a Rasetsu—gaining enhanced strength and regeneration but cursed with bloodlust and a shortened lifespan. This metamorphosis ignites his fervor to forge a Rasetsu Corps for the Shinsengumi’s survival amid rising conflict. He clashes with leadership over deploying the Corps and experiments with Chizuru’s demon blood to stabilize Rasetsu, triggering violent confrontations.

Sannan’s arc escalates when he ostensibly defects to the Imperial Army, allying with Kōdō Yukimura to construct a "demon kingdom" for Rasetsu. At Sendai Castle, he unveils his actions as deception, declaring the Shinsengumi’s orders "absolute." He turns on Yukimura and the assembled Rasetsu, slaughtering them as mercy for their irreversible corruption and bleak future. During this battle, he collapses beside Heisuke Tōdō, admits his miscalculations, and apologizes to Chizuru and Hijikata before his body disintegrates into ash—a hallmark Rasetsu demise.

Across narrative variations, Sannan’s role shifts: he emerges as the primary antagonist in Heisuke’s route, spiraling into madness over his research. In *Hakuōki: Tsukikage no Shou*, he survives Kōdō’s defeat and journeys with Chizuru to Europe seeking a Rasetsu cure. They uncover vampire legends in France and learn of the Shinsengumi’s pardon, while Sannan confronts his mortality without regret. He also appears in the prequel *Reimeiroku*, aiding early Shinsengumi negotiations. In *A Memory of Snow Flowers*, he joins the Shimabara reconnaissance mission alongside other captains, though his specific actions remain undetailed.
