Description
The legendary Chinese military strategist Zhuge Kongming, on his deathbed during the Three Kingdoms period, wishes for nothing more than to be reborn into a peaceful world. He awakens in modern-day Tokyo's Shibuya district, disoriented but alive, finding himself in a bustling nightlife hub filled with music and celebration rather than war. Dressed in his historical robes and believing he may have arrived in some version of the afterlife, he wanders into a nightclub on Halloween. There, he hears an aspiring singer named Eiko perform. Her voice, full of raw emotion and sincerity, moves him deeply, reminding him of the dreams he once fought to protect. Convinced that her music has the power to bring people together and create the peace he always sought, the brilliant tactician decides to abandon warfare and dedicate his talents to managing her music career.
The live-action drama follows this unlikely partnership as Kongming applies ancient military strategies to the modern entertainment industry. Eiko is a talented but struggling singer who works at the BB Lounge, a small live music venue run by the gruff but kind-hearted owner Kobayashi, a man with his own deep knowledge of Three Kingdoms history. Kongming quickly adapts to his new surroundings, using a smartphone to research modern culture and applying his tactical genius to everything from social media campaigns to live performance scheduling. His first major challenge comes when he secures Eiko a spot at a large outdoor music festival, only to have her placed on a tiny side stage directly opposite a hugely popular rock band. Using a variation of the ancient tactic of creating a diversionary force, Kongming manipulates the crowd flow and technical logistics to ensure Eiko gets the audience she deserves.
A significant arc involves recruiting a reclusive former rap battle champion named Kabetaijin, who has retired from music due to performance anxiety and past trauma. Kongming challenges him to an improvised rap battle at the BB Lounge, using poetic verses and psychological insight to break through his defenses and convince him to return to the stage as a partner for Eiko. Together, the trio works toward achieving one hundred thousand likes on social media, a goal set by a major record label executive as the requirement for a spot at the summer's biggest music event. Kongming orchestrates elaborate campaigns involving street performances, strategic online engagement, and rivalries with other artists.
The drama introduces rival musicians and industry figures who become both obstacles and allies. A popular band named Azalea, led by the conflicted singer Nanami, initially appears as competition but eventually finds their own artistic integrity restored through Kongming’s influence. The strategist faces off against slick music producers who underestimate him due to his odd appearance and ancient methods, only to be outmaneuvered by timeless principles of positioning, timing, and psychological warfare. Kongming also struggles with his own memories of the past, including the fall of his kingdom and the comrades he lost, but finds purpose in building something constructive rather than destructive.
The series concludes with a climactic performance at the summer festival where Eiko, Kabetaijin, and their newfound musical family take the stage. Kongming watches from the crowd, having successfully adapted his military brilliance to a world of beats and ballads. His wish for peace is realized not through conquest, but through the unifying power of a song. The live-action adaptation continues in a feature film that raises the stakes with the Music Battle Awards, where Kongming faces a new strategist, Sima Jun, a descendant of his greatest historical rival, in a battle of wits set to music.
