Description
A human girl named Sakamogi Ibara finds herself attending a high school populated entirely by fox spirits after food poisoning causes her to miss her original entrance exams. With no other options, she creates a pair of convincing fake fox ears and a motorized tail, successfully passing the exam for the prestigious fox academy. Upon discovering her true identity during document screening, the principal nearly expels her but instead finds the idea of a human attempting to deceive foxes deeply amusing. Ibara is allowed to remain enrolled under a single strict condition: the moment any student or faculty member discovers she is human, she will be immediately expelled.
On her very first day, classmate Kareobana Susuki immediately sees through the disguise. Rather than exposing Ibara, Susuki finds her eccentric and resourceful nature entertaining and decides to keep her secret, becoming an invaluable guide to the unfamiliar customs and culture of fox society. The school itself exists within a larger world where animal spirits and humans coexist, though fox students attend this academy as a symbol of their autonomy. The grounds operate under their own rules, with a sign at the gate indicating they fall outside the scope of standard criminal law. Ibara must constantly navigate the challenges of maintaining her disguise, from transformation magic lessons to social interactions, while her classmates remain mostly unaware that a human walks among them.
Various narrative arcs introduce a colorful cast of fox students and escalating complications. Niimi Miya, a fox with a phobia of humans based on disturbing internet encounters, struggles with her own transformation abilities. Class president Nariko harbors a deep curiosity about human culture despite her parents confiscating any media that features them. A dramatic arc involves Namiki Kodachi, a fox defeated by the student council president in an illusion battle and transformed into a cluster of leaves. After being blown out a window and merging with hedge clippings, Kodachi returns in a giant, confused state, her identity fractured between her original self and the hedge's consciousness. She later attempts revenge by copying herself onto mushrooms, spreading spores through classmates to take control of their bodies. Through all these increasingly absurd situations, Ibara relies on her human ingenuity, bluffing skills, and Susuki's reluctant assistance to survive each day without blowing her cover.
